How to Make a Conch Horn

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Essential Tools:

    • Conch shell
    • Measurement tool
    • Hacksaw
    • Drill
    • File
    • Sandpaper
  • Optional Tools/Materials:

    • Epoxy (for plugging holes)

Steps to Prepare the Conch Shell

  1. Selecting the Conch:

    • Choose a good quality conch shell.
    • If it’s a commercially harvested shell, it might have a hole near the fourth spiral, which needs plugging.
    • The hole can be plugged with epoxy or temporarily with a finger.
  2. Cleaning the Conch:

    • Clean the conch thoroughly:
      • Wash out any residue.
      • Soak the shell overnight in a 10% bleach solution.
      • Rinse and dry the conch well.

Crafting the Conch Horn

  1. Creating the Mouthpiece Hole:

    • Drill a hole with a diameter of approximately 700 mm (between 5/8 and 3/4 inches).
    • Start with a practice shell if inexperienced.
    • The process might be time-consuming and require breaks, especially with larger shells.
  2. Drilling and Filing:

    • Drill with a small bit to ensure air passages aren't entirely cleared.
    • Use a file to smooth the edges of the hole.
    • Sand the edges using medium grit sandpaper for fine smoothing.

Tips and Observations

  • Practice:
    • Start with a small, inexpensive shell for practice.
    • Take note that larger shells are thicker and may require more time and effort to modify.
  • Physical Effort:
    • Bracing the shell might cause temporary discomfort or loss of feeling in the holding hand.

Outcome

  • The first attempt may not be perfect.
  • Sound quality will improve with practice and adjustments.
