Cranial Bones

  • Occipital: 1 bone; forms lower half of the cranium.
  • Parietal: 2 bones; forms sides and top of the cranium.
  • Frontal: 1 bone; forms the forehead.
  • Temporal: 2 bones; forms sides of the head below the parietal bones.
  • Ethmoid: 1 bone; forms part of the nasal cavities between the eye sockets.
  • Sphenoid: 1 bone; joins all cranial bones.

Facial Bones

  • Nasal: 2 bones; forms the bridge of the nose.
  • Lacrimal: 2 bones; forms the eye sockets.
  • Inferior Nasal Concha: 2 bones; located on outer walls of nasal depression.
  • Maxilla: 2 bones; forms the complete upper jaw.
  • Mandible: 1 bone; forms the lower jawbone.
  • Palatine: 2 bones; forms the floor and outer wall of the nose, roof of the mouth, and floor of the orbits.
  • Zygomatic: 2 bones; forms the cheekbones.
  • Vomer: 1 bone; forms part of the division of the nose.

Facial Muscles

  • Frontalis: Raises eyebrows, draws scalp forward, causes wrinkles on the forehead.
  • Corrugator: Draws eyebrows down and in, causing frowning and vertical forehead wrinkles.
  • Orbicularis Oculi: Ring muscle of the eye socket; closes the eyes.
  • Procerus: Lowers eyebrows, causes wrinkles across the bridge of the nose.
  • Nasalis: Two-part muscle that covers the nose; includes transverse and alar parts, flares nostrils.
  • Buccinator: Thin flat muscle of the cheek; compresses cheeks, expels air between lips.
  • Triangularis: Extends along the chin; pulls down corners of the mouth.
  • Mentalis: Elevates lower lip, wrinkles skin of the chin.
  • Orbicularis Oris: Band around upper and lower lips; compresses, contracts, puckers, wrinkles lips.
  • Levator Anguli Oris: Associated with smiling.
  • Risorius: Draws corners of mouth out and back when grinning.
  • Levator Labii Superioris: Lifts wings of the nose and upper lip.
  • Zygomaticus Major and Minor: Extend from zygomatic bone to angle of mouth; elevate lip for laughing.

Neck Muscles

  • Platysma: Broad muscle extending from chest and shoulder to chin; lowers jaw and lip.
  • Sternocleidomastoid: Extends along neck side from ear to collarbone; rotates head side to side, up and down.

Muscles Attaching Arm to Body

  • Latissimus Dorsi: Large flat triangular muscle covering the lower back.
  • Pectoralis Major and Minor: Chest muscles assisting arm swinging.

Shoulder and Arm Muscles

  • Trapezius: Covers back of neck, shoulders, upper and middle back; shrugs shoulder, stabilizes scapula.
  • Biceps: Contours front and inner side of upper arms; lifts forearm, flexes elbow, turns palm outward.
  • Deltoid: Large triangular muscle covering shoulder joint; allows arm extension outward to the side of the body.
  • Triceps: Large muscle covering entire back of upper arm; extends forearm.
