Introduction

  • Objective: Introduce UP as a Public Service University and the NSTP (National Service Training Program)

UP as a Public Service University

  • Importance of Service:
    • NSTP focuses on serving the nation.
    • UP has a tradition of community service.
  • Goals of UP:
    • Promote academic excellence and public service.
    • Develop the youth's potential to serve their country.

History of UP and Service

  • Murray Simpson Bartlett:
    • "UP must be for the Filipino."
  • Rafael Palma:
    • UP's aim is beyond just producing graduates, but to promote original thinking.
  • George Bocobo:
    • Teaching civic consciousness to students.
  • Activism during martial law.
  • Establishment of UP Open University (UPOU):
    • Provided opportunities for distance learning.

Implementation of NSTP in UP Diliman

  • Foundation of NSTP:
    • NSTP Law of 2001 (RA 9163)
    • Objective: Develop civic consciousness and defense preparedness.
  • Three Components of NSTP:
    1. ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps)
    2. LTS (Literacy Training Service)
    3. CWTS (Civic Welfare Training Service)

Description of Components

  • ROTC:
    • Military training for college students.
  • LTS:
    • Teaching literacy and mathematics to those in need.
  • CWTS:
    • Active social service for the welfare of the community.

NSTP Requirements

  • Required participants: All students taking a bachelor's course.
  • Exemptions:
    • Those who have completed NSTP in another course.
    • Foreign students.

Tatak-UPD-NSTP

  • Developing an NSTP Program Map:
    • Aligns with UP's identity as a public service university.
    • Emphasizes dignity and excellence in service.

Common Module

  • Topics:
    • NSTP Orientation, Human Dignity, Gender and Development, Disaster Risk Reduction, etc.
  • Objective:
    • Prepare students for the remaining NSTP units.

Process of Redistribution and Change of Matriculation

  • Regular process: After the Common Module, choose an NSTP component.
  • Special period: During a pandemic, no selection; automatic transfer to the instructor's component course.

Implementation of NSTP Projects

  • Projects:
    • Addressing issues on national security and environmental conservation.

Completion of NSTP

  • National Service Reserve Corps (NSRC): All who complete CWTS and LTS become part of NSRC.
  • Citizen Armed Force (CAF): ROTC completers join CAF.

Important Information

  • Tuition: Half of the regular tuition for NSTP.
  • Health and Accident Insurance: Required before serving.
  • Integrated NSTP: Combines NSTP 1 and 2 in one semester.

Evaluation and Assessment

  • Grading: Numerical and not just pass/fail.
  • NSRC and CAF: Issuing certificates with serial numbers.
