[Music] parental nutrition also referred to as PN is a medical and nutritional treatment that is usually given in hospital but sometimes given at home for eligible patients you may also hear your team refer to it as Total parentral Nutrition or tpn parentral nutrition provides the nutrients your body needs when you cannot eat due to illness surgery or when your stomach or bowel is not working properly it may also be used to supplement when eating or tube feeds are unable to provide enough nutrition if you require parental nutrition it can be prepared by the pharmacy department at some hospitals within Horizon Health Network the following hospitals can prepare parentral nutrition for admitted patients Dr Everett Chalmer Regional Hospital miror machine Regional Hospital Monon Hospital St John Regional hospital and upper river valley Hospital the St John Regional Hospital can also prepare home parentral nutrition for patients who are eligible to receive it parentral nutrition is a liquid and it is provided in a specialized bag it is administered with a pump through an intravenous or IV catheter which is a small tube inserted into your vein parentral nutrition contains everything you need to meet your energy and nutrient requirements including protein also refer refer to as amino acids carbohydrates also called dextrose fat also called lipids or fat emulsions electrolytes such as sodium pottassium and calcium vitamins and minerals your PN team works together to make sure that everything you need is in your parentral nutrition your team members include specialist doctor for example gastroenterologist surgeon or pediatrician nurse dietician pharmacist your team members are always here to support you let them know if you have any questions or concerns about your parental nutrition your PN is prepared by Pharmacy staff in an area of the pharmacy called a sterile room this is a very clean room that is used to prepare medications that are given intravenously like your PN at some hospitals within Horizon Health Network the sterile room has a compounder machine to prepare your PN when the compounder is used your order for PN is entered into the compounder computer program and then a label will print the label is compared with what the doctor ordered to make sure there are no errors the label is then scanned on the pump and the pump draws up the correct components to make your PN bag everything is labeled and double checked by the pharmacy team before being sent to your nursing unit some hospitals within Horizon Health Network use premixed bags of PN since there are different types of premixed bags to choose from your PN team carefully selects the bag that best meets your needs the pharmacy team mixes the bag and adds in extra required nutrients like multivitamins before sending it to your nursing unit bags are double checked by the pharmacy team to ensure they have been prepared properly your PN is stored in the refriger Ator on your nursing unit until it is time to administer it once it is time to start your nurse will hook up your PN most PN is administered continuously over 24 hours at some sites lipids or fats may be administered separately and administered over a shorter period of time such as 12 hours your PN team will regularly review your medical conditions blood work and progress based on their assessments your PN ingredients may be adjusted to ensure you continue to receive the optimal nutrition necessary to help you recover from your illness the team also monitors for any complications that could occur due to parental nutrition including infection changes in your blood work and possible difficulties with your IV access site most people do not require parentral nutrition after Hospital discharge once you can take in enough nutrition either by eating or buy a feeding tube there could be other reasons that your PN is recommended to be stopped and your PN team will discuss this with you if this occurs once again your PN team is here to support you if you ever have any questions or concerns regarding your parentral nutrition please talk with your physician your nurse your dietician or your pharmacist
