in this video I'm going to finish our discussion on the communication process or the process of communication I am going to talk to you at this point about something we call interference interference interference in the communication process exists it is always present interferences anything that impedes the communication of a message anything that impedes the communication of a message anything that blocks it are hinders it keeps your audience from properly decoding what it is you've encoded what it is you've prepared and I think it's good to know that there are two sources of interference two different sources the first one is called outside interference outside interference pertains to things that come from outside the audience like physical distractions in a hallway you know noises in the environmentally noises in a hallway or construction outside the building these things are known as outside interference and usually speakers can recognize that speakers know that that's outside interference and it's getting in the way and quite often speakers can do something about it a teacher could step out in the hall and say hey can you guys keep it down for just a few more minutes we're almost through or I mean you can't shut the construction down outside but maybe you can make some kind of goofy remark make fun of them or something and get people chuckling I was in the classroom for many years on this campus and the classroom was ice cold there was no thermostat in my room and that that place was ice cold in the summertime in the summertime you would literally want to bring a jacket because the thermostat was controlled by another instructor in another classroom who really needed the temperature down my students would come in they were cold and I was cold and I had to be in there all day they're only in there for an hour but I would say to them I mean I would have to address it I couldn't turn it down I couldn't make it warmer but I would look at them I would say something like hey guys I know we're freezing I'd advise you to bring in some extra layers I know it's July but I bring some extra layers because I can't change the temperature in here I need a joke about the thermostat being in a concrete ball 40 feet beneath the ground and then I ever got the code to it they'd have to kill me or something like that maybe they chuckle at it or I'd make fun of the teacher who had control of it and stuff and in a fun way with a little banter and they laugh at it now did that make them warmer no did it allow them to learn in the classroom at an easier pace easier rate the answers yes now how can that be they're still cold well most of the distraction didn't come from them being cold you can't bundle up the distraction mainly came from their questioning why doesn't this little guy do something about the temperature in his room I couldn't but by addressing it in the early parts of this of the lecture in early part of the semester they understood it was out of my control that was covered and they came in wearing warmer clothes and we didn't give it a second thought so overcoming outside interference isn't that big that much of a challenge for the presenter but the other type of interference is and that's called insight interference insight interference comes from within an audience I'm talking here about things like personal problems or emotional problems or physical problems that the audience brings in with them all right speakers have a hard time overcoming those because speakers don't recognize them I can't look at a student until what's going on in their life most of us are good people and we don't want to pass our burden off to others so we put a smile on her face every single person has a stress in their world that's close to overwhelming and we learn to put a smile on her face and try to make each other's life a little easier while we all deal with those things but we can't look at each other and know what those issues are now sometimes the inside interference is universal where the entire audience is experiencing the same emotional dilemma or something like that and speakers might recognize it but they probably will misinterpret it an example of that is in the early days of us being a college we were very new at it we there was a learning curve there we were getting things wrong and we in those early days had some serious issues with our financial aid getting the finance it was all done by cheque and stuff like that and we we were having problems getting our financial aid to the students on time for whatever reason you know you know maybe the money wasn't put in by the state at the time that we thought it was going to be put in maybe the people in the office some people might have been gone that day and that was a person who signs the checks or whatever the case might be and you guys were were you know paying the price for that and you weren't happy you know if you were supposed to get a check on Thursday and it didn't come there was a problem spent it I had Friday especially you know maybe you've already had your single mom a single debt and you had the utility people on you know bring them down your neck saying you're more than a month behind you better get this paid up and you're making deals with them and you're saying look I promise you I'll have a check on Thursday or on Friday or whatever the case might be if you can wait till then and they work a deal with you and all of this and all of a sudden you're banking on that money it's the end of the week and we don't get it to it and you're not gonna get it to Monday or Tuesday of next week now they're gonna cut your utilities off your kids are gonna be in a dark hot or cold house and all of this kind of stuff that wasn't good it actually happened a little bit thirty years ago it actually happened a little bit and you guys would be highly disgruntled when you came into our classroom we didn't know it it surprises students sometimes that we teachers don't know everything that's going on in your lives as it pertains to VR TC but we don't a college campus is kind of like a little community and all of us work here are like little store owners I this is my store in my classroom it's my store and I sell this product and the people on financial aid have a store and they they have a product and stuff and we don't we're like a small town but we're all condensed in this little piece of real estate but we don't keep up with what others are doing so when you guys wouldn't have that happen you would just come in upset kind of mad at the school we saw the anger we saw the disgruntlement but we didn't know whether it's from usually I know I can speak for myself I'm sure with others but kind of took it personal we thought it was us maybe I shouldn't have told that joke earlier maybe it was something I did last week maybe it's the grades on the last test they're mad at me and it wasn't me at all so overcoming the inside interference is very difficult sometimes impossible especially when we don't even recognize that there's a problem so interference is a major component of the communication process and you need to factor in that it's going to be there in some way shape or form when you're encoding your message so you can come up with ways of addressing it while you're delivering your speech thank you
