spontaneous and conversational talking how can we do it let's talk about impromptu and extemporaneous speaking stay tuned [Music] hello dear learners this is reyna welcome back to our oral communication class after watching my videos on oral communication are you ready to talk spontaneously every time you watch a beauty pageant the most awaited part is the question and answer portion why because we want to know how witty the candidates are we want to know if these beautiful women are women of substance but answering a question with no preparation at all requires a lot of width and confidence it is not easy we may have read a lot of information but answering a question for 20 or 30 seconds is difficult absolutely i think i can't handle it too i don't know i haven't tried it i can't be a beauty queen okay today we are going to discuss the last two types of speeches according to delivery they are in and extemporaneous our lesson objectives are the following at the end of the lesson you are going to classify speeches based on manner and style of delivery and apply the principles of speech delivery we discussed in our previous lesson the two types of speeches according to delivery they are manuscript and memorized speeches those types of speeches are not quite challenging in terms of how quick you are in organizing your thoughts impromptu and extemporaneous speeches are for those speakers who can manage conversation like debates panel discussion and interviews look at these videos politics larry j sabado explains because democrats are going to resist as much as they can over repealing the affordable care act it's going to tie up congress for months we can only hope that the venezuelan government truly does make reform perhaps not only to the economic status of the country but democracy as well love bollywood every film a blend of brilliant colors and infectious music the comedic resolution disqualifying aqua vehicle based on the issues of marginalization geographical representation and normally qualification is violative of the law due process constitution and jurisprudence wow impressive let's get to know how to be like them let's discuss the third type of speech which is impromptu you give an impromptu speech when you are asked to speak on the spot oh wow and you do not know ahead of time that you will be speaking before a group what are some examples meetings where you give your opinions or suggestions ambush interviews where journalists ask you questions classroom discussions q and a during beauty pageants which one do you like most i recall when i was in high school i was so scared every time our teacher would ask us random questions did you experience it when such situations arise do not panic no one expects you to deliver a perfect speech there are practical tips for impromptu speech delivery as stated by fletcher and croatia first is the content present a definite point of view in your speech your opening sentence should be an attention getter oh really state of firm clear specific standpoint or position for example you say i just cannot agree with the motion to postpone the classes so next is you have to support your point of view with reason and logic you should tell them why you have that opinion and support your reason with details example if someone asks you why you love the person and then you just answered i don't know i just love her that's enough no it's not a good answer you should give reasons why you love that person are you in love sure present at least some specific data site quotations statistics examples to support your position and link your speech to what previous speakers have said the rule of the thumb never apologize saying story from the public is a big no in public speaking for example you say i'm sorry i'm not actually the speaker today so i didn't prepare what to say like i don't know what to say because i'm not prepared as the famous saying goes the show must go on so whether you are prepared or not come on act as if you are well prepared the second one is organization even though it is an on-the-spot speech it should be organized how will you do it three words can help you get your thoughts and organize what you are going to say these words are past present and future past is after a brief attention getter and statement of your subject or point begin with a brief consideration of past events related to your subject then state the present condition of your subject how things are at the present and future and present possibilities for the coming days weeks or years regarding the subject the basic format is introduction attention getter preview discussion main points logical arrangement supporting data conclusion review or memorable statement in delivery there are simple techniques which may help you deliver your impromptu speech effectively first speak with confidence maintain eye contact with your audience looking at you avoid saying well you know good morning classmates good morning ma'am um my topic is about climate change and uh this topic is uh very important because uh you know it's kinda these are dragon expressions well you can't avoid these fillers do not overdo it and maintain good posture speak loud enough to be heard easily gesture effectively appear to enjoy speaking speak with enthusiasm hide your blunders and properly sit down when you are done in my experience two years ago when i presented my action research during our research congress here in our city one thing i kept in mind confidence eye contact relaxed one thing i said to myself i wanted to deliver it while i understood which i i didn't need to read my powerpoint do believe that technology gives information but technology does not give brilliance to language only reading and writing too okay here is my sample speech for impromptu based on the format that i have discussed earlier this is not a perfect sample but this will just give you an idea how it looks like what are the advantages of impromptu speech the main advantage is that by giving one you can present your ideas make appeals or disseminate information at a time most appropriate or most needed by your listeners what you say may have great value and impact and it can improve your image in the minds of your audience the more you are exposed to speaking the more you improve actually making videos here in youtube has added more confidence on my part i know i'm on a learning process thank you dear learners and viewers you are truly my inspiration what are the disadvantages because it is on the spot it is easy for you to perform poorly since you have no time to prepare this often results to rambling wandering and wasting both your time and your audience time as well and people may say hmm you are beating around the bush i don't understand what you are saying impromptu speaking makes anyone nervous what you see in beauty pageant q and a portion is a real scenario that impromptu speaking is not easy to handle well whatever the situations we are involved in we can't get rid of unprepared speeches because communication is part of our day-to-day activity the last type of speech is extemporaneous this is a common activity done in school especially during english festival or even inside the classroom this type of speech gives you an opportunity to prepare you deliver it by referring occasionally either to your outline or to your brief notes which may help you recall specific points and ideas well it may not be an on-the-spot type of speaking with the limited time it is still not easy to handle most extemporaneous speaking contests the contestants are given just four or five minutes to prepare based on our observation the moment that the contestants started talking they don't look at their notes but actually you or they can still bring their outline if needed i believe the format is still the same as in the impromptu speech but it is just the time that makes it different we always say that content is very important in public speaking but in impromptu and extemporaneous it is not only content but time remember if you are given 30 seconds or 2 minutes or 5 minutes to talk spend only within the given time many people cannot handle time pressure but in speaking time is cold it is precious hope you learned something happy learning see you
