Music Composition Tips

so essentially this is what you're going to be given you got your instructions in the previous pictures and I just rolled out onto mine scrap paper just to give myself a little bit more room here's the list of instruments that you can choose from but we won't worry about that for the moment first things first you want to find your key so if you don't know offhand what two sharps are you got your last sharp find out what line that's on so we know for our space is it spells face so FA see this on the C line and you go up one welcome dr. C D through the key of D major if one right on top your page if you remember one of your one of your tasks you have to match it the dominant what's the dominant it's the fifth Norse or the fifth key in your scale so what I don't down here in my roof work I roll out the scale of D d e f sharp G a B C sharp D next thing you want to find your force one two three four or for me fall too much this you want to change fall to fee we know that falls Jace or going change G to G sharp and remotely into our dominant which we know is our fifth notes one two three four five so you want to have a G sharp and then you want to have a in the next part so you want to have a G sharp in bar seven and an A in fire ish so before we tackle our melody at all I want you to put in all the niggly bits so your form down along the side right in your power lines plot out your template which again you had in your previous picture so now I just put it in all those little bits I have my farm down along the side again in previous pictures you saw this the form that you want to have your gonna modulate in bar seven to eight you're gonna put V here and you want to match this your new key the dominant key over here here we want to have an imperfect cadence so notice in the card of one in this bar and notes in the card of five in this bar and then you want to end on a perfect cadence and you're obviously going to end on door what's door if you look down here it's D I've also plotted the chords and for the card one the Carter five because suppose they're the ones we're going to be using for our cadence point card one is d F sharp and a and the card of five is a C sharp and E you remember from a harmony question where I got those cards from so in your a one phrase you want to have a variation of a and you also want to have a modulation embarrass seven eight before we get that how do we want to vary our a phrase into our a one phrase so I just put in the tonics on fat underneath the a phrase just so I can get a better idea of where I'm going to be going how do I know the time starts up because I plotted my scale and myselfi in my roof work so just look at the way the money is going door-to-door so how can i vary that so I decided to do put in quavers Dottie Dottie and end on soul with a minim then for my next bar I borrowed a rhythm from here and manipulated this bar so lost so far so this this is going down step so I decided to extend my range a little bit put a dotted crotchet quaver and crotches now we need to plus our modulation so we know from before from doing our rough work that the nor we need to change is far too fee which is G - G sharp the reason we're changing that because we didn't change anything then the key would stay the same so I'm going to continue on if you can see here from the air phrase we're moving up and step so that's exactly what I want to do starting on D which I know is dough but I'm not gonna sound a too close to the modulation it's ok maybe the first note in in the bar but I won't put over here because then it will make the modulation sound weaker so I'm just going to go open step all in crotchets like it's doing here at the first part so I'm not changed through the round too much and then I get into G I'm gonna make it a sharp so I need to have the first note on this bar a white because it's the dominant how do you know it's the dominant because the dominant is the fifth note and after passing out roof work we know what that one two three four five eight is the fifth note and I want to do so race off white because I know it sounds nice so saw is a ray is e so I'm gonna go down to e and I'm gonna put a lower a then an important as a minim because it's a cadence and a cadence is there ending our phrase so you want the anywhere phrase nice and final and a minim is a long note to do that now we're moving on to our B phrase and inner B phrase we want to have a sequence in bar 9 and 10 and then an imperfect cadence in bar 11 and 12 so it's called practice to base your sequence on a rhythm from the given phrase the given phrase is the a phrase so I chose power 3 as the rhythm that I was going to use III I also kind of copy the melody in that in a similar way as you can see here the one off by step so I decided to move my sequence up by step so it's good to after your after your modulation to go back to the to go back to the original key and the original key is D so I start I decide start on a sequence on D or a doe so I went up and in step d e f g or door Amy far and then I decided to go up to tones for my our two notes when I rise my sequence so then I did F G a B me far solo a sequence is repeated passion at a higher lower pitch because my sequence was rising I decided to rise my sequence rather than doing a descending sequence then I'm in peril Evan I want to take notes from the card of one how do I know what the card of one is because there's no work over here earlier so I did a G F D and F these notes are just passing notes so where it will rain for for the strongness of the pair or the the notes are on the beach I have an a and F a D and an F which are all notes from the card of one and then in bar twelve I have notes for the car to five AC sharp and E the main note is a so I decided to end on a like we done in the B phrase ending on a long minim e F is the past note a sharp is a passing note G and a so when you're in the end now our a to phrase like our a one phrase and like our a phrase you want to have a bit of a variation in ish I try to extend the range just so it sounds final so so you have your climatic point so what I done I took the bear Wan from the a phrase and I brought it down an octave if I brought up an octave it just would have been too high with ledger lines so I brought it down an octave then here are they notice up here by two is gone as far as saw so an article - so I decided to some step movement which we know was quite popular from I give a phrase that movement and ending on an a here or so like the John in bar - then here I decided to have a bit of a climatic point in bar 15 and we know we want to end the perfect cadence so you want to contain notes from the card of five in power 15 so here I have an e FG e a e F sharp and E which are all notes from the corridor five with some passing notes in there as well I decided to use a quaver movement and to have my high note here a so as concede the low note here is a and the highest know is a so I've actually extended this range by two octaves and then I ended on dough before I got there I don't dough me dough or D F sharp G again which are notes for the chord of one also enter the minim because this the end of the phrase is the end the piece and you wanted to sound final now we're puttin our last few bits which is our dynamics our phrasing articulation and of course taking our instrument now I do these a different color just so you can see that but obviously in your exam you won't for use a pencil so I start off loud just put in an MF there Margy loud I put in slurs as you can see we're a moving step movement serves me to play smoothly so again here moving step movement to put in a slur putting slur here here here as well then in terms of dynamics as i said i put in an EMF allowed to start off with i put in a crescendo which means to get louder coming up to my modulation just so you can have that modulation nice and clear here because obviously I'm ending my phrase and also it's the B fridge so it can be a little bit different I put a decrescendo because I'm going down the step then I put in a crescendo because then I'm going up and I'm starting now sounding loud at that cadence point there and I continue to be loud so after my crescendo I can't age below right into the end here I have a pause mark that just means to obviously minimum is worth 2 so that's me to pause a little bit longer on that minim these commas here just mean the end of a phrase so these are so important that you put in these comments at the end of each bar to indicate the end of your phrase now last thing or take my instrument I'm going to take a violin my highest note is a or B actually sorry and my lowest note is a below middle C so the lowest note that a violin can do is G below middle C it also is able to play quick semiquaver movement if you're using maybe a trumpet can sound that got lower that high would have that hive arranged I flutes because I have quaver movement here it might be a bit higher for the flutes to take a breath same with the oboe also the flute to sing go below middle C over does go lower but again when I'm using that quaver movement when you're playing a wind instrument it might be hard to take a breath so it's always if you're not going below G below middle C a violin is always a safe shout so yeah that's the end the melody hopefully that helps I know for some of you starting off its the biggest question you have is how do I know if it's going to sound nice and I suppose it just takes practice you need to do these as much as possible listen to them as much as possible and get used to knowing what works what doesn't work always if it means writing out Karabakh so be it because then you know these notes when they're in the car they're gonna sound nice together he's going to sound nice going to see Sheriff going to e they're all notes that are part of the card so yeah it just takes a little bit of practice if you want to put in the tonics out for everything do if that helps as you can see I only put it in for some bits all these little bits here don't matter that's all a part of your work there won't even take what's literally written on the stave so yeah hopefully this helps and enjoy Junior melodies [Music] you [Music]
