thank you [Music] all right so before we get this video started you guys are probably wondering what I'm doing inside this old ass TV let me tell you but first check this out [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] the oldest aspect ratio is 4x3 Academy ratio and there's nothing like it the emotional effect it has on the viewer how it makes any film look like it's from an older time period and emotionally transports us to that vintage time is what draws me to it and whether I'm shooting music videos short films or just stuff around the house the 4x3 aspect ratio has been my go-to [Music] 4x3 also known as 1.33 by 1 was the default in film and on television sets that's why I went today when I watched Fresh Prince of Bel-Air George Lopez and The Parkers it makes me feel and miss my childhood 4x3 is what makes creating films fun for me and what sparks my creativity is putting myself back in a time period before I was born and creating something fun so although 4x3 isn't the standard anymore for me it's something that I can't let go of [Music] all right so how's everybody doing out there today it's of course your boy valandez in today's video we're going to be talking about aspect ratios and more specifically the 4x3 aspect ratio now some people may think that talking about aspect ratios is a boring topic considering that we can be talking about lenses and cameras and other fun gear stuff but to me aspect ratio and what you decide to record your videos in or what what you decide to take a photo on that's like the start of creativity that's where your creativity starts so to me aspect ratios first and everything else follows even when trying to decide what lens I'm going to shoot with where I'm gonna shoot something from that all goes into consciously thinking about your aspect ratio before you even put it on YouTube or wherever you're going to be put in your your film now you may have noticed a lot of filmmakers and a lot of creators who just create videos on YouTube like myself have been adopting the use of the 4x3 aspect ratio for our videos now the 4x3 aspect ratio is not to be confused with a square although at first glance until the normal IMA look like Square it is indeed not now in this video I'm going to talk about the reasons why I myself personally like using the 4x3 aspect ratio for the videos that I create but before we do that why not give you guys a little bit of a rundown and low history lesson now the 4x3 aspect ratio was created in 1892 by William Dixon who just so happened to be an employee of Thomas Edison which is wild to me now the numbers 4x3 literally just describes the size of the film which means it was four by three inches of a 35 millimeter film stock now before wider images were available 4x3 was the Hollywood standard 16x9 is now the standard for most Hollywood films now what's great about cameras today that they didn't have the luxury of when filming back in the day was you can film in whatever aspect ratio you want to I literally can put my camera in 4x3 a 16x9 I can put it in any aspect ratio that I want to so that way I can frame and compose my shots without having to you know crop the size or go back later I expanded or do something else in post I can do everything and film everything how I want it to look in camera and every aspect ratio plays his part I don't think 4x3 is good for everything but I do think it's good for most things that I do in my opinion for me but now the reason that I personally decide to shoot in 4x3 is one stylistic and two Nostalgia so for me I'm a very very very nostalgic person I like old video games I like old movies I like I like old clothes I like old vintage retro everything and like with everything that's retro and old it always makes a comeback it always becomes cool again this is the reason why a lot of photographers are going back to shooting film maybe not now because the film prices are going up again and it might be a wrap I don't know Kodak it might be yeah I don't know about the film but the reason film photographers were shooting film again is because we were getting looks and feelings from film that we just couldn't get from shooting on digital cameras this is the reason why we shoot we put old vintage lens is on our digital cameras to give it more of a filmic vintage look everybody's chasing Nostalgia everybody's chasing the star just the reason why when we see things that look like they were filmed and released back in the 90s or 80s or 70s we go crazy for it I feel like my childhood was one of the best times of my life now I'm a millennial so I grew up in the 90s so there is no real technology no smartphones and stuff like that I was lucky enough to go through both eras before we fully got into a digital age so there's things that like when I hear or when I see or when I smell it that just reminds me of my childhood and it takes me back to some of the happiest times of my life I feel like Nostalgia is like a kick of dopamine for me like it feels good it always makes me feel a certain way that I can't really explain and I always want people to have that type of feeling while watching my videos and again I feel like there are some stylistic approaches and reasons why I also shoot in 4x3 so now for me composing things while shooting for by 3 has been amazing it's been something that I necessarily can't get while shooting any other aspect ratio now if anybody is familiar with Grand Budapest Hotel it is one of the best movies shot in 4x3 one of the best newer movies shot in 4x3 in my opinion now there's a bunch of things in that movie that makes that movie great but I think the the choice of shooting it in 4x3 really cemented and made that movie what it was not to say that if it wasn't shot in 4x3 that it would have not given the same feeling but because it was it did what it was supposed to do now don't get me wrong there are advantages to not shooting in 4x3 you are limited to a certain amount of space 4x3 I feel like I've said that so many times in this video and I'm like tired of saying it but you are limited to the 4x3 aspect ratio like we're in right now so you can't see the things to the side of me on either side you can only see what's in this and I feel like if you are trying to get a wider angle you'd probably have to take a few steps back and if you know I wanted more seen in my video um I don't have the luxury of scooting my camera back because there's a wall behind my camera and my camera can't go any further back so if I wanted people to see more of those things I would have to shoot in a different aspect ratio so you are limited and constrained to this aspect ratio when you shoot in 4x3 as opposed to 16 by nine or 21 by nine nine by 16 whatever it is that you choose to shoot your films in now I've noticed that not everyone is a fan of the 4x2 3 aspect ratio which is okay sometimes when you make stylistic decisions for your films or your photos or whatever they may be they're not going to be liked by everyone there's some people who despise and want to get away from the 4x3 aspect ratio altogether some people don't like the nostalgic Factor some people don't like that you know you're constrained to like looking at a square because that's what it looks like then there's some people who just feels like sometimes things might have been better if you could see more on a screen for me I just love the nostalgic factor of 4x3 again I love the way it makes me think when going to compose and film certain things and you know what needs to be in a shot what's cluttered was too much and you know what I'm saying I feel like that makes me think a little bit more about precisely what I need to put in a shot opposed to like just cluttering my scene with too many things so but yeah 4x3 just like any other film you know film was amazing and that was all we had at the beginning and then digital came in and then all these other Technologies start coming in so you start to get forget about it but then at some point that stuff does start to come back and that is what we're looking at now you see more people shooting 4x3 you see more film shot on 4x3 so yeah expect a lot more of it not just for me but from a lot more creators so but yeah that's my reasoning I feel like a lot of people notice that I shoot for about three or like my videos have been in 4x3 um but I never really talked about why and I feel like right now is definitely trendy but um for me I I guess I don't want to make it seem like I'm super cool I got a real reason why I do it it's not because I'm on the trends or anything like that but that's that's what it is I got a real reason but yeah man I hope that video wasn't too boring I hope you guys enjoyed it got something out of it if anything you know what I'm saying just came here to hear me talk because you know my smooth soothing voice is always you know relaxing and
