Overview

  • Purpose: Perform a modified bed bath, including face, one arm, hand, and underarm.
  • Preparation: Bed head raised for demo, but not during actual skill exam.

Steps for Bed Bath

Initial Steps

  1. Address Client
    • Use client's name.
    • Introduce self by name.
    • Example: "Hi, Mrs. Jones, my name is Mark."
  2. Explain Procedure
    • Speak clearly, slowly, directly.
    • Maintain face-to-face contact.
  3. Provide Privacy
    • Use a curtain, screen, or door.
    • Ensure bed is low and locked, call light within reach.

Preparing for Bath

  1. Check Water Temperature
    • Ensure safety and comfort.
    • Ask client to verify.
  2. Wear Clean Gloves
    • Before washing client.
  3. Remove Gown
    • Place in soiled linen container.
    • Cover client's chest and lower body.

Washing Process

Face

  1. Wash Eyes and Face
    • Use washcloth without soap.
    • Different area of washcloth for each stroke.
    • Inner to outer aspect for eyes; proceed to wash face.
  2. Dry Face
    • Use dry cloth or towel.
    • Blotting motion; different part for each area.

Arm

  1. Expose One Arm
    • Place cloth towel underneath.
  2. Apply Soap
    • Use wet washcloth.
  3. Wash Hand and Arm
    • Include fingers, fingernails, hand, arm, underarm.
    • Keep rest of body covered.
  4. Rinse and Dry
    • Same areas as washed.
  5. Gentle Movements
    • Avoid force and overextension.

Final Steps

  1. Dress Client
    • Put on clean gown.
  2. Clean Basin
    • Empty, rinse, dry basin.
  3. Dispose of Basin
    • Place in dirty supply area.
  4. Dispose of Linens
    • Use soiled linen container.
  5. Avoid Contamination
    • Between student clothing and used linens.

Completion

  1. Remove Gloves
    • Dispose without contaminating self.
  2. Final Checks
    • Ensure signaling device is within reach.
    • Bed in low position.
  3. Conclude
    • Wash hands; skill complete.
