hello students and welcome to the next lesson in our as level psychology course today we're going to be looking at what abnormality is abnormality the term Normal and abnormal have to be used carefully in a sentence no two people are exactly the same so why does that make someone abnormal if they're not like someone else if everyone is going to be naturally different well abnormal is generally defined in the realm of psychology as lacking normal qualities but just as abnormal is hard to Define it is also hard to Define what normal is there are many ways in which we can Define abnormal and these are really shown in three models to Define abnormality in Psychology and we're going to be looking at it later in this course there are three main models which are going to look at ways to Define abnormality the first of which is a deviation from social norms if someone deviates from what's seen as normal behaviors in society you are deemed as not having these normal qualities that Society adopts and therefore you are abnormal also the failure to function adequately if you're not able to function adequately as a human being and be able to use um all of your characteristics uh positively and pro-socially then you are deemed as um a failure to function adequately and that will not make you normal also deviation from mental health there are a set of six kind of indicators of what makes a positive mental health and if you do do not follow these and you have a maladaptive mental health then that can make you abnormal here are some questions on abnormality have a go at answering these on another sheet of paper by pausing the video and then hit play for whenever you're ready to see the answers here are the answers if you got all of these right congratulations I'd advise you to move on to the next video which will be on deviation from social norms the first model we can use to define abnormality as always thanks for watching and I'll see
