welcome to the proper project management youtube channel where we provide project management training tips suggestions and advice to help you run your project more successfully so if you are a current project manager or are soon to become one then be sure to subscribe now today we are going to be looking at project constraints and more specifically what are they we're going to be looking at what the main project constraints are and for you to be aware of and we are going to give some examples of those so what are project constraints well project constraints are factors that can limit how a project manager can deliver so they suppress or in other words constrain the quality delivery and execution of the project and impact in the overall success so what are the main project constraints to be aware of well the project management body of knowledge suggests that there are six main constraints to be aware of schedule or time and these are factors that affect the schedule of a project or the time it takes for a project to complete and provide its deliverables and previous projects are commonly used as a precedent with their data helping to provide appropriate scheduling for the current project and these estimations should help to prevent potential delays change requests risks and uncertainties now the second constraint to be aware of is the budget or cost now a project must adhere to its overall budget allowance and budget estimates need to be presented in a range considering external market factors and previous project performance the next project constraint is quality now the project deliverables must be fit for purpose and anything that can impact this ability to produce sufficient quality can be a constraint the scope so what is included within the scope of the project and what is to be excluded there needs to be clear boundaries between the two when it comes to scope that it needs to the relationship between time and cost should be considered as well resources so the availability of people knowledge experience or ability equipment materials they're all such constraints and they may require working around now the last project constraint is risk and that's the ability to effectively foresee failures at every step of the project and to be able to prepare for them accordingly now all these constraints are interrelating meaning that if one of them changes then at least another one will be impacted too so i've documented some examples of project constraints here against each of the different aspects so we've got schedule constraints so these can be deadlines proposed by the project sponsor of course they could be very tight deadlines or they could be a lot more expensive budget so there could be limitations set on the project budget quality so there could be a sudden rise in manufacturing costs which affects the overall product quality as other suppliers are sought out time limitations can also decrease the ability to provide the promise quality and meet expectations the scope so if a project scope extends then it can affect how the project can deliver resources so the preferred expert for instance might not be available or the machinery that's required for production might not also be available and these are common constraints that project managers face and lastly we have risk so the company or the business may have a low appetite to risk and that may result in a conservative approach that must be followed so in summary project constraints limit choices particularly if you are not cognizant of them and plan ahead accordingly so as a project manager this is why it is vital while it's still early in a project to document all of the constraints that you can identify and then you should use that documentation as part of the basis of planning your project now i hope that this video was helpful and you are now aware of and familiar of project constraints if you have any questions please do drop them down below and please do subscribe and like to support this channel and you'll be notified when we release more videos like this and if there are any other topics you'd like to know or would like us to cover then please also drop them down below now have a brilliant day
