General Facts About the Liver
- Largest internal organ in the body.
- Weight: 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms in healthy adults.
- Location: Right side of the body, under the lower ribs.
- Structure: Consists of four lobes of unequal size.
Proximity to Other Organs
- Gallbladder: Located under the liver; connects via bile duct and cystic duct, part of the bile system.
- Stomach: Lies to the left of the liver.
Blood Supply to the Liver
- Oxygen and Nutrient Requirements: Liver needs both oxygen and nutrients, supplied by two main sources.
Oxygenated Blood Supply
- Hepatic Artery: Delivers oxygenated blood from the heart to the liver.
- Aorta: The artery from the heart supplies other organs like the spleen and intestines.
Deoxygenated Blood Supply
- Portal Vein: Carries deoxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the stomach, spleen, and intestines to the liver.
- Hepatic Vein: Carries deoxygenated blood away from the liver to the heart.
Detailed Blood Flow
- Hepatic Artery: Supplies about 25% of the liver's blood supply.
- Portal Vein: Supplies about 75% of the liver's blood supply.
Liver Structure and Organization
- Lobules: Hexagonal units within the liver containing hepatic cells.
- Central Vein: Located at the center of each lobule, connects to the hepatic vein.
- Portal Triads: Consist of portal vein, bile duct, and hepatic artery.
Pathways
- Blood Flow: Portal vein and hepatic artery deliver nutrients and oxygen to hepatocytes, respectively.
- Bile Production: Bile produced is transported to the gallbladder via bile ducts.
Special Cells and Functions
- Kupffer Cells: Hepatic macrophages important for the immune system.
Summary
- Liver Functionality: Integration of blood supply and nutrient distribution within the liver's structural units.
