Lecture Notes: Design Thinking by Login B. Stamper

Overview

  • Three parts of the presentation:
    1. What is Design Thinking?
    2. How to be a Design Thinker
    3. Key Benefits of Design Thinking

What is Design Thinking?

  • Definition: A method to maximize brain power towards innovation involving a fusion, creation, and culmination of ideas.
  • Companies using Design Thinking: Starbucks, Apple, IBM, Nike, Procter & Gamble, Cisco, Toyota, Airbnb, Bank of America, ESPN, IDEO.
  • Acronym IDEA:
    • I: Involve, Immerse, Ideate, Implement
    • D: Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver
    • E: Explore, Empathize, Engage, Evolve
    • A: Acquaint, Analyze, Articulate, Apply

Big Idea of Design Thinking

  • Key Steps: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.
  • Nature: Iterative process - cyclical, involves repeating steps to refine solutions.

Steps in Design Thinking

  1. Sense: Pre-surveying, conduct observations, establish project awareness.
    • Use the "POEMS" template: People, Objects, Environment, Messages, Services.
  2. Empathize: Understand users' needs, develop persona, deep need statement.
  3. Ideate: Brainstorm ideas, cluster, map, prioritize, concept development.
    • Ensure solutions are desirable (human aspect), feasible (technology aspect), viable (business aspect).
  4. Prototype: Channel solutions, select ways for users' experience, involve stakeholders.
    • Methods: Storyboarding, role-play, dioramas, circuit designing.
  5. Test and Iterate: Pitch solutions, gather feedback, repeat until user satisfaction.

How to be a Design Thinker

  • Skills Required:
    • Observation, Empathizing
    • Interviewing, Needs analysis
    • Conceptualization, Prototyping
    • Presentation, Communication
  • Characteristics:
    • Creative, Active listener, Team player
    • Energetic, Responsive
  • Collaboration & Communication: Share ideas, build on others' ideas, expand your "box"

Key Benefits of Design Thinking

  • Skills Developed: Brainstorming, critical thinking, empathy.
  • Teamwork: Promotes collaboration.
  • Self-Discovery & Professional Growth: Encourages optimism, discipline, and responsibility.
  • Innovative Mindset: Fosters systematic thinking.

Conclusion

  • Design thinking fosters innovative problem-solving and a user-centered approach.
  • Encourages systematic, professional, and innovative growth.
  • Emphasizes empathy, collaboration, and adaptation in solving real-world problems.

Final Thoughts

  • Practice Design Thinking: To become innovators needed by the world.
  • Next Steps: Start, empathize, team up, think options, fail and repeat, learn by creating, visualize and share, believe in the process.
