hi today what I want to do is teach you about the Cornell note-taking method now the Cornell note-taking method was developed by a man named Walter pock and he wrote a book a long time ago called how to study in college and this book is an absolutely amazing book but you don't need to go and read it the method itself is very very simple and I want to show you how to do that today so we're going to focus on using one note for this method but when we you get to it you can also use it on a piece of paper and any other bit of package that you want to but for me one that is a wonderful place to do this because it allows you to insert all other bits and pieces as we go along so let's have a look at the Cornell note-taking method the Cornell note-taking method is really simple in that to take the notes you take your piece of paper or your digital piece of paper and you rule two lines you rule a line down the left-hand side to make a thin margin and a larger pane over the right and then at the end of taking notes you rule a horizontal line line to make a small section down the bottom now the top the largest pane is the area that you take in your notes in the pane that is down the bottom is for your summary and the pain that is down the margin that is down the left-hand side is what we call the cue column so let's go through what the function of each of those areas are so let's firstly look at the note-taking area now the note-taking area is the area that you use to take your notes now you can take the notes in any way that you want to be it straight note taking with bullet points or texts that you're writing examples that you might be using you might take time lines in a history you might draw Maps you might do mathematical working problems whatever note-taking method you want you use in this area here and the really important thing is not to copy down everything that's being said but actually to put it into your own words because that engages more of your brain as you're actually working the other thing to do is draw pictures if you can because it's pictures worth a thousand words and you can really save some time there so when you're actually doing that that the area that you take your notes in this what we call the note-taking frame a note-taking area at the same time if you have any questions that come to mind you need to write them over in the cue column over on the left hand side how many times have you had a really brilliant question you need an answer too but by the time the teacher got to you you had forgotten what the question was so you need to write it down here and if you don't get an answer there's going to be a problem there because the question is your brains way of saying I don't understand the relationship between this new information and my pre-existing information and I need this answer to be able to solve that so you need to make sure that you get those answers also while you're taking the notes if you get any important information also write it over into cue column so things like definitions or test dates or anything like that you want to put over in that cue column at the end of the lecture at the end of the note-taking session the lesson that you have with your teacher what you want to do is reduce now your notes into a really simple dot point so that's the first thing here we want to reduce those and that occurs again over in the cue column what this does is it actually makes you rethink everything as and the way that you've learned that information as you're going through and then what you can do is something that's really neat you can look at adjust at the cue column and you can work at try and work out if you can remember what you are learning at that time and if if you don't know what you are learning that's when you go back to the note-taking area now the final part of the method is looking at the reciting reflection and review process and this is where the note-taking method the Cornell note-taking method really truly becomes a method and at the bottom you've got this summary area and this is where you need to summarize your notes in a sentence or two or a couple of dot points and that sort of thing what this does again is it makes you condense everything down a little bit further but here's the really cool bit if you take notes every lesson for every day you soon end up with a huge amount of notes and to go back over those is really quite difficult so this note-taking method allows you to read the summary area first which will just be a few points and that will remind you what's going on if that doesn't make any sense that's when you come up to the cue column and you look at what's happening there and if that still doesn't make sense and you still can't remember that's when you go and look at the note-taking area and it takes the human brain about 15 to 20 times of going through information to take it from short-term memory to long-term memory and so the note-taking method allows us to do that as so every evening if you quickly review the summary area of today's lesson yesterday's lesson and the lesson before that and so on all of a sudden you're learning and relearning all that information and putting it all together so let's have a look in OneNote what that would look like and I'm just going to make a brand new page so here's my empty canvas so I'm going to choose now a just a pen and I'm going to hand rule my line down the right-hand side left hand side sorry and you can see that I've just drawn a line and I've made my two column so I'm going to labeled here I wouldn't do it when you're actually trying to use this as a method so I will take my notes over in the notes area and I might use a mind map putting concepts together and looking at the relationships or I could use a timeline where I have an important event set certain times or I might also just want to write dot point notes as I come through and have the main bits of information as we're coming through whatever method that I would want I using that content frame then what I do is over in the cue column I have any questions that come to mind I also write any definitions any glossary terms there's any special dates or due dates as we're coming through and then at the end of the lesson then what I do is I try and get everything into some really concise dot points which is a pre summary and then what I've got is I've condensed all that information over the right-hand side into that pre summary that evening or the next day that's when I write my summary and I take the information from my pre summary and I hopefully put it into a couple of points so hopefully you can see now the Cornell note-taking method really simple to use or use it on a piece of paper use it on digital paper and one notes amazing for doing this and then what we can really spend our time on is learning that information and really we're focusing down here on this summary section first second if we don't remember what's going on there that's when we come up to that cue column and if we still haven't learned it that's when we come over to our note-taking area so that's the Cornell note-taking method the best thing you can do is give it a go it's really easy to test and that if you go and try it for a week or so you'll soon find out if it's having an impact on your learning
