Overview
This tutorial explains how to efficiently bounce stems in ProTools, highlighting both outdated and modern methods, with key limitations and recommendations for users.
Old Method for Bouncing Stems
- Previously, users had to commit or print every track to embed inserts into the audio files.
- Each audio file then had to be individually consolidated before export.
- The export shortcut (Shift + Command + K) only exported raw audio without inserts, panning, or volume settings.
- This process was time-consuming, often taking 20–30 minutes.
Modern Method for Bouncing Stems
- Users can now highlight the desired tracks, right-click, and select "Bounce" for quick stem export.
- This method preserves inserts, volume, panning, and ensures all exported stems have the same start time and length.
- The process is much faster and eliminates the need for consolidation and manual exporting.
Limitations of ProTools Stems Export
- The new bounce feature is only available in ProTools Studio and ProTools Ultimate (not in ProTools Artist).
- Stems exported this way do not include audio routed through buses (sums); only individual tracks’ inserts are included.
- Competing DAWs like Ableton, Logic, and FL allow bus or sum stems to be bounced, which ProTools currently does not.
Recommendations for ProTools Users
- Use the new bounce function instead of Shift + Command + K for faster, more complete stem exports if on Studio or Ultimate versions.
- Be aware that tracks routed through sums or buses won’t be included in bounced stems; plan your workflow accordingly.
