Overview
This lecture explains how to create and organize Module 3 assignment sheets and shapes using CAD software, including setting up viewports, drawing shapes to scale, and preparing files for submission.
Setting Up the Drawing File
- Open the file created in the previous lesson and save it as "Module 3" with the current date.
- Ensure cursor, snap, and tracking options (45°, 90°, 135°) are enabled for accurate drafting.
- Use key snap settings: Perpendicular, Quadrant, Intersection, Center, Midpoint, Endpoint.
- Recreate the grid in the title block to divide it into six equal squares.
Creating and Managing Viewports
- Move the existing viewport to the top-left corner and adjust its size to fit the square.
- Copy the viewport into each square for six total viewports, one per shape.
- Rename the layout to "128 M3 3A" and make a copy for "3B" using the move/copy layout function.
- Update the drawing name, date, and sheet number in the title block for each sheet.
Drawing Assignment Shapes
- Use the rectangle tool to draw a 2x2 inch square, enter D for dimensions, and check sizes with DI (distance) command.
- For circles, use C (circle), input radius for the required diameter, and check using DI.
- Use the offset tool to create inner circles or parallel lines at precise distances.
- Draw a hexagon with a polyline tool (PL), using angle tracking and accurate side lengths.
- Construct the L-shape figure with PL by entering segments sequentially.
- Adjust each assigned shape within its viewport, set the scale to 1:1, and center it.
Additional Shapes for Sheet 3B
- Draw a 3x3 inch square with offset lines spaced by half an inch; use the trim tool to clean up lines.
- Create an 11x11 inch triangle using PL and set its viewport scale to "3 inches = 1 foot".
- Use the ZOOM E (extents) command to fit all shapes within the viewing window.
Finalizing and Submitting the Assignment
- Move shapes in model space or adjust viewports to ensure only intended shapes are visible.
- Change all viewport layers to "defpoints" to prevent them from printing.
- Check and update title block fields: name, date, correct sheet number, and scale.
- Save files, export to PDF, and submit per assignment instructions.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Viewport — A window in the layout showing a specific area of model space.
- Snap — A drafting aid for precise cursor location at specific geometry points.
- Offset — A command to create parallel geometry at a set distance.
- Defpoints Layer — A non-printing layer used for reference points and viewports.
- PolyLine (PL) — A continuous line composed of one or more line segments.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Complete drawing the remaining assignment shapes.
- Update title blocks with correct information.
- Save, set layers, create PDFs, and submit your assignment according to instructions.
