England Faction Guide for Medieval II: Total War

hello I'm Luca Toric's and welcome to my England faction guide for medieval to total war now as some of you may know that I've seen the channel before I did a faction guide for every single faction in rome total war where I discussed the campaign strategy buildings and units and all that kind of stuff did a brief summaries and I'm going to be doing that for all of the playable medieval two factions as well starting with England today so no nonsense let's get straight into the video so England as you may have guessed has a starting position around this region you can see they have two settlements in what is now known as the British Isles whatever you want to call it Britain and have one settlement in modern-day France which we'll talk about in a second the game says that they have the strengths of a superb lumbermen and strong infantry but weakness of cavalry so there you go the campaign rules 45 regions including the Jerusalem region and England is a Catholic faction in the game which is very important particularly when you look at campaign strategy more so but first of all let's have a look at the units that England have and we'll move on from there okay so these are the units for England in medal to total war as you can see there are quite a few there are a wide variety of units in medieval to total war as opposed to run anyway we'll get straight on at the beginning so peasants peasants have improved slightly in my opinion since rome total war an attack of four and a defense of three but as the game kind of insinuates they are really only good for cannon fodder you don't want to be using them in a long sort of fight or anything really they're just sort of in a place hold as I suppose do not rely on peasants is all I'm saying because poor morale and those terrible stats you're not gonna get very far with them but of course you can get them in the early period next up town militia slight improvement honestly not a huge improvement attack of five defense of seven combat bonus in woods and snow is fairly decent but again these guys are sort of indecent for garrisoning a town particularly one that isn't gonna be attacked very often but you know there are a lot better units of course next up levy spearmen so a spearmen unit for England one of two spear infantry I believe at this stage so early levy spearmen attack of five defensive seven which is exactly the same as the town militia if you have a look but also these guys can do a skill trim which I believe is like similar to a phalanx is a defensive formation anyway with spears bonus fighting cavalry which is good good trait to have on a spearmen so these guys are kind of defensive good for holding towns I would say so particularly in the early stage and as it says effective against cavalry next up the spear militia now honestly these are very very similar if you have a look at tech of five defensive seven can do skill trim it's very very similar between them between the two units so yet honestly is not a huge amount between these two lads in reality next up armored sergeants I would say a fair amount better for sure attack a seven which is two up but defensive fourteen is massively up it's a big improvement and if you like to have a good sort of defensive unit even then these guys are quite good in the attack as well these guys will stand and fight for a while they haven't got good morale they have got bad rally they like the peasants which is a good thing indeed next up bill militia bill militia have an attack of 13 but as you can see a defense of one which is extraordinarily low these guys are heavy infantry they're vulnerable to missiles and yeah they're not particularly well armed and I mean you can see the defense is one it's very very poor which is surprising but there we go militia unit armed with a billhook and little armor and they're not joking of course but charge bonus of four is better than these others Finland for example next up Billman this is normal bill man these guys again don't have a great defensive defensive three but they have a much better attack compared to the previous units or 15 again they're vulnerable to missiles so you know you have to use them situationally but they can be useful because they're high attack it can kind of use them as a shock troop I'd imagine next up heavy bill Mons a heavy bill man this is a big step up because the defense mainly cuz there the defense goes up from three to ten but of course these are late period so you won't be able to get them straight away for short attack 15 as well so the same thing but well-armored good stamina they are step up from Billman of course but it's only really in the defense which is a bit of a shame next up heavy bill militia again this is very similar as a lot of very similar units if you look these guys are superior build militia armed with a billhook and heavy armors these are better armored than like these guys for sure these are like heavier versions of the bill measure essentially well armored versions of those which were previously mentioned next up dismounted English Knights attack of 21 and defense of 13 which is very solid particularly on the attack but I believe it's quite hard to retrain English knights and all these kind of lads you know because a lot of the settlements won't have the capacity to do so so these guys might look good and they are good but you want to use them sparingly because you won't be able to retrain them everywhere you can't just throw them around saying that they have got a good morale they're well armored and a good stamina so they will stand and fight the defense of 13 is honestly slightly underwhelming but good morale well armed with it makes up for a lot of that for sure next up an early unit now dismounted feudal knights but they are quite expensive but for for an early period unit a defense of 21 an attack of 13 that's pretty solid particularly the defense and again the fact they're well armored and good stamina and good morale means they will stand and fight for a long time which in the early game is invaluable you put these guys up against sort militia units and they should they should tear through them hopefully next up armored swordsmen so if you look relatively similar in terms of the stats just that +1 defense and these guys any unit with good morale well armoured a good stamina sir that's good indeed but these guys are as the game describes are from the hype area to the very very latest period so it's gonna be a while that's why dismounted funeral Knights we can get earlier in the game they're pretty useful indeed peasant archers now I mean these guys aren't gonna stand and fight in the melee that is for sure they are peasants for a start and their archers so the combination of two isn't exactly brilliant a very underwhelming missile attack of five but it can use flaming missiles I generally like missile troops I'm a big fan of missile troops in general so peasant archers I will still find it useful you know if you give them the high ground on the wall or something like that they'll do an okay job but obviously missile attack a five you can't expect them to do anything spectacular and they haven't got really really long-range missiles so bit of a disappointment I suppose but they're peasants elves are also a lot keep a low recruitment cost low to retrain it's pretty decent aren't jamesha no missile attack of five very similar stats in terms of the melee and they've only vulnerable to missiles themselves which is odd as well so honestly these guys are just they're they're ones that are just called to defend settlements so you know these guys will be used on the field more I imagine they do have a knife and all that these guys militia troops so they're meant to be on the wall defending but they're basically the same as the peasant archers in terms of stats right how do you say this blimey oh yeah these ones so these guys have a missile attack of fourteen which is significantly better than the two previous archers these these are missile troops I just can't pronounce them I'm sorry I'm not an expert on medieval history attack of six and defense of three so an attack of six for a very missile troop it's pretty solid it means they can do a decent melee attack for the missile attack of fourteen is very strong indeed of course they're vulnerable to missiles themselves and there are good defensive unit but they will do a solid job fired at close range this noisy smoking lethal weapon causes morale damage as well as physical physical hurt so of course this is a late-game troupis not they're not archers so that's why they do so much more damage than these guys and obviously these guys in getting the earlier periods whereas these lads are in the later period so you know they're they're naturally going to be a lot stronger and they're particularly close-range pretty lethal won't set Sherwood archers these guys are early on and these guys are awesome sixteen attack nine defense missile of thirteen so it says wielding a long vote made of you and able to hide in any terrain these men are excellent ambushes and outstanding marksmen pretty cool and the fact that Archer has good morale long-range missiles which is better than the peasant archers and the archer militia that's really awesome these guys show it archers pre legendary but I believe you can only recruit them in certain places which is a shame and also only 16 unit as comparison to 127 you can get double the amount of archers in one of these units so these guys will be using a lot more commonly than the showed archers unfortunately next up longbowman in the Hyperion so late-game and honestly in the late game I would doubt the arts is that that useful to be honest there anyway that's a matter of debate I suppose missile attack of six is only slightly better than the peasant and militia arch militia but the attack in the melee attack of seven and defense of four is as fair step up so they are more competent in MLA and I do quite like an archer that is competent in melee just because if they get hit by cavalry for example they can hold their own for a little while anyway so that's pretty good next up yeoman archers I hope again pronunciation you can correct me in the comments if you wish to do so missile attack of eight defense defense of five and attack of nine days are late period or high period as it calls it here troops English freeholders required by their Kings we trained in warfare highly skilled ranged troops long-range missiles anyone that's got a long-range missile is pretty good indeed next up late period retinue longbowmen attack of ten defense of fourteen with a missile attack of eight so a pretty all-round troop here their soldiers who are good in the melee you know that 11 of 14 that's a really solid melee attack and defense if you add a missile attack of a to it as well that's you know really awesome complements that pretty all-round good troop you have here long-range missiles again as well can use sharpened stakes that's quite interesting as well as curves the cavalry you know the game flagged the cavalry as weak and I would say yes it is relatively weak you know in all periods really so Popular's again apologies hobby lars early period cavalry lights cavalry with spears useful for chasing down light infantry and pursuing fleeing enemy and what that's basically saying is unless you want them to route burn it relatively quickly or die basically don't get them to charge into a long protracted melee with a decent you know spearmen I mean you wouldn't I would never advise charging spearmen with cavalry anyway but any kind of infantry it's not meant for that these guys are sort of flank yeah in a late in the battle you know and then pursue fleeing troops it says because they're fast moving because they're like cavalry although I have to say the like cavalry in medieval to total walk to me to my mind seemed significantly slower and the like cavalry in rome total war next up merchant cavalry militia poorly trained as a great selling point poorly trained but well-equipped cavalry who fights with a sword six attack before ting defense you look at the defense's double that of the previous cavalry that I mentioned so they can hold their own a little bit more which means that they are better in an actual long fight they will be able to hold their own against err infantry like so next up mailed Knights another early cavalry and these guys are more solid it's more round attack of ten defensive fourteen and good morale cavalry I find generally is pretty overpowered the fact that cavalry can stand there and fight and they don't need that charge bonus which is sick since incidentally that's pretty cool and it can be pretty deadly if your to fight against them but again these guys are like pretty expensive and all that so you know in the early early game I don't know if you'd really use them that much for sure next up demi Lancers armed with a lance but less armor these units are mobile and deadly 13 attack 12 defense and that's not terrible the defense the fact that game that they have good morale I mean yeah this is you know if there's still a well armored it says powerful charges of eight which is very solid indeed I think the game's kind of underselling these guys a little bit because their stats look pretty solid and any LSA only true-blue good morale is a good troop in my eyes pretty much next up futile Knights early on but again expensive to maintain and recruit and all that because they have the heavy armor that you know the good morale again good morale cavalry so is pretty solid attack of ten defense sixteen slightly underwhelming attack but the charge bonus of six will do a solid job indeed move down slightly okay that's nearly all of them next up generals bodyguard this junior here of course the classic generals bodyguard attack of thirteen defense of sixteen pretty solid good rail very good stamina powerful charge of eight and well armored so you would expect the generals bodyguard at least to be a good unit of cavalry use these guys well and they will be very effective like all generals bodyguard pretty much next up English Knights leg blade period lads ten sixteen charge bonus of eight on lawns need a lot the Camry looks very very similar but these are like elite warriors steel plate all sorry steel plate armor so they're going to be hard to hit with like missiles and all that they they pack a pack a punch and they're hard to kill as the game says next up generals body got so late period generals bodyguard you can see they have a better defense if you compare them to the earlier one 13 16 13 17 and yet the hit points are exactly the same off to again good morale these guys are pretty solid you could just see they're more well armored they're better armored from the picture because that good steel plates next our Knights Hospitaller yeah sorry it ho pronounce that wrong anyway cavalry well trained and disciplined these Knights are amongst the deadliest heavy cavalry in all Christendom so not very fast because a heavy cavalry they're going strong troops with an attack of 13 you put that other charge bones of eight and that's a 21 attack which is pretty strong indeed plus 16 defense for cavalry that's that's pretty that's pretty good as well I'd say so the late period cavalry it can kind of hold their own a little bit more good morale powerful charge well armored more the same really it is pretty pretty solid mixed up Knights Templar elite and some say reckless Knights formed to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land so you're gonna be using these on Crusades mostly pretty much can form a wedge good rail powerful charge they're fighting for their religions so they're obviously gonna do a good job so let's have a look at the the siege equipment and all that ballista so but Esther they've been back since rome total war attack of 55 defensive eight which a lot of the defense at eight foot that's not too bad anyway so yeah these these are basically like massive crossbows i suppose is the best way long-range missiles good morale for the troops though holding the thing obviously pretty solid i obviously don't use bullet I never used the matching rome total war I don't think I really use them much in medieval to either I would probably use a catapult more you need to break down walls and all that because that's what they do area attacks these guys are a lot less accurate of course which is the frustrating thing but they're good at knocking down walls that is something they can do and I do find it occasionally catapults I useful like on a bridge battle maybe if you're just firing down onto a bridge leg they can be quite cool but having siege equipment in your armies throws it down massively so it can be very annoying lugging that stuff around on long distances that is for sure next up reports I need to look up the names of these things before I do these videos that is my bad as to too many soft brown Asians for me anyway a small multi-barrel weapon a wagon sorry mounted cannon so pretty badass stuff in the late period a good defensive tool able to fire in a nine barreled barrage so yet long-range can impale several men pretty lethal not against building so next up trebuchet hey something that can pronounce as good these are giant rock flinging artillery piece that are useful for taking down buildings as you can see is a 90 attack against buildings area attack very long-range missiles awesome flaming missiles can launch rotting cows who doesn't want to do that and good round suppose not if you're vegetarian I don't know mortar siege weapon capable of firing over walls on plunging shots down on enemies hiding behind set walls so these guys are for breaking down walls and 150 attack against buildings is awesome again really liked period stuff so you don't may be able to use it for a while bombard very similar thing primitive siege gun forged of bronze or iron can shoot solid stone or framing shots inaccurate versus units you don't use the stuff gives units really it's more for breaking down walls culverin like period 230 attack versus buildings they're a long-range missiles good morale can't hide well yet that pretty much didn't these be set and then these guys like a special units that can only be recruited or mercenaries bought whatever in certain regions of Britain well Spearman we can guess probably where they're from Wales and miss you're not very intelligent they can do a skill trim serve an attack six defense so you know yeah this Welsh mercenaries who fight on armored that's the reason why they haven't got very high defense but if you look on from 15 unit so the fact that numerous is pretty good and any unit can do a skill charm I reckon is pretty decent as well and Irish Kearns early period they can't have a melee attack but if you look on the missiles the missiles are actually better than the art Jam peasant militia which is pretty cool but they haven't got the range they do I suppose because they are throwing javelins as opposed to firing boats anyway that took a while there's a lot of troops and medieval to total wars these faction guides are gonna be a lot longer but nothing I can really do anyway I'll get onto the campaign strategy now after we look at the introduction video [Music] with the Norman Conquest and a crowned king came the dawning of a new era for England Nobles ordered the construction of mighty castles to fortify the realm to rule this land is a birthright but to control it requires the courage and skill few possess it is a kingdom this sent by enemies the Scots press at its borders the Vikings to the north and the French separated by a mere channel of water the country exists in a state of war as even the comments [Music] in these times of total war it rests on the shoulders of those who need to ensure the Kingdom does not fall into ruin [Music] right so here we are this is the England starting position so three settlements as you can see and I'll be talking about campaign strategy in a second but let's see where we actually start off so we have we have Nottingham London and pronouncation time again call I don't know I'm guessing that's how you say that settlement Oh God I'm not French so I apologize if I've just pronounced your city wrong there anyway that place so we have three places that we start off with which is good and I have to say England starting position is one of the strongest out of any of the factors a really strong position any one that starts on an island such as mande Britain and you have a massive advantage clearly you know in real life and in the game you know in real life would Britain would England the Allies of One World War two if it wasn't for the fact that we were on an island for example so you know big things like that it makes a difference so what my advice is well well there's many many ways to do it so I'm not gonna say categorically that my way is the best way but I think there are several logical steps which you can take first of all I would consolidate the land on what is now modern-day Britain so what I'm gonna do to show you the Testaments relative to Nottingham and London and don't you take the fog of war off obviously I don't normally play with the fog of war off but just so I can show you their surrounding settlements so you know where they are that's what I'm gonna do so just quickly turn off the fog of war and now I can actually see what is going on which is good right so as you can see there are several settlements and another faction that are on what is now modern-day UK so my advice is consolidate this land first you want to take I wouldn't bother expanding anywhere before you've got all this region sorted particularly I would try and spine the efforts of Scotland purely because they only start off with one settlements they're not too difficult to take out they will likely go for Inverness very quickly but if you're all quick enough you can actually stop them before they get to Inverness and it will remain rebel you do have to be pretty quick about that those depending on how quick they are I suppose but yet like my opinion is why would you start expanding it's the Holy Land or France or Revoltech territory in Europe when there's still an enemy a potential enemy on your doorstep in Scotland and rebel territories that you haven't taken it just seems stupid to me so I would go for of the York and Canal burn and you're likely to get missions telling you to do that anyway particular for the Wales just meant over here as well Dublin's a nice one to take gets on the island on its own Island so it's relatively easy to tap well it's all relatively easy to take its realtively easy to hold because the reason is mainly is obviously the beginning the majority factions don't have a huge Navy they're unlikely to go for you they're unlikely to bother to travel across say to attack you they're more likely to attack settlements there are on the same land mess as they are on so yeah York and connivin you liked to take anyway because of missions and all that and you get reward to take name which is obviously good I would then try and eliminate Scotland now as I say if you get to Edinburgh quick enough before they take Inverness then you can just wipe them out if you take any breath and the other armies become rebel and that's that you do have armies over here you have this one of prince ruthless why is this woman popping up sorry I haven't played maybe I had to uninstall it and reinstall it and now is getting all the advice again which is pretty decent yes you have armies around here you have an army in Nottingham as well not amazing armies but they should like do the jobs you're quick enough and you can hire mercenaries if you're desperate as well ten thousand starting isn't a bad amount of money to start with once you've consolidated lands around here well then you have options I would go for Anna another system I would go on for early on is rents or rent rent properly I don't know it's nicer assessments take you can go for Bruges in Antwerp I'm personally wouldn't because they are quite vulnerable settlements if you start getting the walls with the Catholic factions early you know Denmark and France and the Holy Roman Empire which Antwerp and Bruges border practically then you could be in a lot of trouble and you're gonna overextend too quickly and also if you pile resources too much down here you won't be able to stop the Scots that easily so for several reasons I wouldn't vote for Bruges in Antwerp but Wren yeah that's quite good one to take and you lift you have an army of captain Robin out here ready to strike Wren so it's just knowledge call you go for that now if it is me I personally don't like attacking the Catholic factions too early so France for example and the Holy Roman Empire and Denmark and all that I don't some people literally don't care what the Pope thinks of them and they charge a head but obviously there are repercussions to doing so but by the time you have consolidated land over in modern-day UK you can probably they'll probably be a some sort of mission or crusade and to go to the Holy Land Jerusalem and claim that in the name of Catholicism and which point going on a crusade it's quite good to do unfortunately England is about as far away from the crusading that's not quite if you were in you know Denmark maybe it's slightly further away by boat but it's one of the most faraway factions from the Holy Land as you can get but it's worth going on the crusade Crusades are great they help the generals grow you get a lot of you get a lot of good units you can have you know pay for units while you're on crusade and blah blah blah so go and Crusades pretty good thing as well and the Pope likes you so you could Bend these will vary slightly a bit later so I would recommend going towards the Holy Land and not attacking France too quickly but when the time comes you'll you have a strong base here which France won't be able to tack they just won't attack you're more likely to get attacked by Portugal it's something I've seen a couple of times before where Portugal likes go and take Dublin or Caen Arvin is a bit odd so maybe watch out for that but no in general and don't worry too much about these lands then once you've consolidated land here you can port rude South without having to worry about the presence of the Scots all the fact that Canavan is still rebel and you haven't bothered to take it yet so that's my advice basically on the campaign is consolidate Holy Land and then you can start attacking the Catholic factions that's my advice but you know you can go on the internet and find lots of different advice that's the nature of medieval to total war you can kind of do it in many ways as you want you know you I've seen people go for no Oslo is calm and go for Denmark before they go for France it's not what I would do but you can do it if you want right what we'll do to end the episode is look at the different buildings that the England faction can have and then we'll call it a day so these are the different buildings that you can have in a city I will start from the top that's probably logical so the different types of walls you can see here this you know is similar for quite a few factions of this type you can see that at each level up from village to large city you get a better level of walls pretty logical really improved towers ballot bats barracks military academy siege stuff to make you know siege works see trade ports for trade you know you can get from a grain exchange to a merchant quarter churches of course it's a Catholic faction so you get up to a huge Cathedral or Chapel or whatever and then these are the guild these are the different guilds assassins masons theologians merchants alchemists thieves Explorer saw Smiths Knights Hospitaller sorry and the horse breeders guild if you always look at the different guilds another time I could do that if that's what's requested but they go this is just showing you and then for castles these are obviously a less a lesser variety of buildings that you can get because the car so it's more of a defensive thing rather than a trade settlement but these are those from guilds and buildings you can get in a castle as well but of course the walls well the walls you goes up to a Citadel so pretty amazing walls and all that so anyway that is my just general guide for England as medieval to total war you can play in many ways I think England there's a cool faction players and I say their starting position is very strong sorry so you should take advantage of that indeed but yet I'll be doing faction guide similar to this for all of the men you will to total war factions like I did for rome total war to keep an eye out for them thank you very much and I'll see you out
