Guidelines for Citing Legal Cases

[Music] to cite a case you will need the case name in italics the year in brackets the volume number if available and the abbreviated law report name you will also need the starting page number of the case you can usually find all the details you need to cite on the first page of the case let's break down each part of the citation first up the case name don't use full stops start each name with a capital letter only use last names and only list the first plaintiff and first defendant if there are more than one use the letter v to separate the party names and make sure the v is in italics when speaking about cases we pronounce the v as and in civil action and we pronounce it as against in criminal place the year in brackets whether law report is organized by volume use round brackets if it's organized by year use square brackets you can check to see what brackets you need to use by looking at the case next comes the volume number but some cases won't have a volume number always use the authorised report where available and abbreviate the name of the report series the last thing to add is the page number that the case starts on [Music] you
