10.3 Eight limbs of Vāstu

[Music] swagatham in previous video we discussed about what is vastu shastra what is vastu and what is vastu purusha mandala and how this vastu can be seen in different perspective and the different squares different types of squares in vastu purusha mandala in this video we will be discussing about the issues which are discussed in vastu shastra vastu shastra has is actually made up of eight limbs which is called eight limbs of vastu lim number one is yajamana host without him the concept of vastu itself will not exist the core objective of vastu shastra is to provide satisfication peace of mind and prosperity for a dweller or the owner so the yajamana placed an important role in vastu shastra because he is the one for whom this whole building or whole construction is happening then comes means architecture all aspect of structural design developing detailed specification cost estimation and unique styling commanders so the second important aspect that's why these are called as the limbs of vastu shastra angas of vastu shastra then we have shilpi the technician who actually according to Maya Mata there are four types of technicians work on a building that we will gradually we will see who are those four then comes bhumi land then comes vastoshpati that is offering the beginning of an architecture Endeavor any architecture Endeavor starts with two activities one is vastu pujana and another is balidana so that is actually comes under this vastavati that can be translated as offerings then we have pada Vinyasa that is site layout once these above mentioned things have happened gradually we go for the next step that is site layout this is the approach to site layout or design for the proposed construction based on vastu purusha mandala next limb is vastu that is materials it deals with the materials used and processing of those materials as required for the construction in detail ah for example if somebody wants to build a house so what are the materials required cements rocks and then maybe water and iron so these type of thing and how these materials to be processed these type of details we find in vastu part of the vastu shastra then we have alankarana part which we can we usually translate it as Renovations and decorations in vastu ah this deals with two aspects interior and exterior design of a building and repairs and modifications so these are the aspects dealt in Alan Karana part so these are the eight limbs which play a very major role in building any type of construction whatever construction we take these eight plays a very major role that's why these are called as eight limbs or Ashtanga of vastu now let us as I was mentioning in shilpi that there are four types of shell piece now we will see who are those four number one is thapati sapati is architect the thapati's job is a very creative one he uses his knowledge of the shastras deploy the available material and direct the skill labor to create new structure for example we see that some poets or we see some painters like artists or painters whatever we want to call when they are very much into that painting or into that poem they become so creative that they start thinking from different angles this is what actually sapati also do is like an artist who actually want to create something new or want to bring his creativity in that building so he comes with a thought and he prepares a plan so these are our thoughts which actually is the job of stapati or architect so the architect must have or sapati must have a good knowledge of different Sciences while practicing architecture and construction engineering that's why he is called the master architect knowledge of measurement of time space area mass motion and estimation of direction is very important for sapati to be very well versed in more than one branches of learning including mathematics astrology and The Vedas is the major knowledge areas which is thapati must have so with these points which I am mentioning what I want to say is stapati must be well versed in most of the sastras or most of the disciplines which are required to construct a building so why I am presenting all these points is to mention that must be scholar of many disciplines if we see the present day most of the engineers I am not saying all Engineers but at least some Engineers we see that they come and build the building but they don't know what will be happening next so the plumber will come he will plan for pipelines and he will break the building from at some parts obviously and then he will install the pipes then again it person will come he will install his wire for that he will break the building so in this way the beautifully constructed building by an architect or an engineer will be broke several times just because the building was not well planned before Construction so what is important for a stapati or the master architect is to be very well prepared before constructing any building so there are eight types of Works which have been identified for someone to attain Eminence as astapati if one has to be a master architect eight skills he must have skill in intricate design carpentry building that is using bricks Etc art works on Stone artificially creating new things out of existing material for example if he has very less thing so with that less thing how can he build a new very beautiful house of he has a very lot of things available lot of materials available how he can use those material and build a building and also Flawless execution of the plan so these are the eight types of Works which have been identified for someone to attain the Eminence and this tapati according to samarangana sutradhara text the skills required are shastra and Karma shastra is knowledge of technical details of the craft and Karma means practical experience in the application of the knowledge making him skilled Craftsman then there there are two more which are explained in samarangana sutradhara those are pradnya and Sheila pradya means intuitive Insight which endows him and imaginative mind and artistic orientation Sheila means righteous character character which also ensure that he will succeed in his endure with the right attitude of orientation as I said stapati means the master architect sapati is head of the team consisting of Sutra grahin takshaka and vardhakin we have been saying this that there are four types of technicians so of these technicians the first is tapati the master architect then comes Sutra grahin Sutra grahin is the draftsman who actually holds the Sutra who deals about the measurement of the building and all then we have takshaka who actually caused the stone word declare required for the house then we have vardhakin who adds to his work by joining parts of finishing their surfaces means if whatever takshaka has carved this worthy can actually joins them and gives the shape to the house or any building works with the takshaka closely and is subordinate to him Sutra grahin is the disciple of sthapati often his son or his successor who is considered capable of completing the project if the situation arrives in case if now in the previous times if the temple was built it used to take more than 100 years sometimes several years are required to construct a very beautiful Temple in case if Sutra grahin who has taken this task because of some reason he gets ill or he dies there must be somebody who can take care of this project so Sutra grahin is the person who will be the disciple of stapati and might be the successor of him and he will take care of such situations the labor pool of the architectural team will be guilds that is like there will be a Sangha there will be a team called shilpi Sangha trained in their respective traits responsible for the construction other than these four there will be team team of the people who will be actually processing the acts which are given by these four technicians the four technicians which we discussed as tapati then we have wardhakin we have Sutra grahi we have takshaka these are the four technicians so in this video we discussed about various issues discussed in vastu shastra like eight limbs of vastu then we discussed what are the four types of technicians and what are their duties and what qualification they must have in next video we will discuss about town planning which we had discussed earlier in a bits and pieces but now we will discuss it in detail till then namaste [Music]
