so what you're going to be doing to summarize what a summary is is you will be condensing a long Passage into one paragraph a paragraph of about 120 words that's what you need to do in a summary while condensing while while condensing this passage you will need to keep you need to retain the main ideas of the passage so basically you're going to get a passage that's maybe maybe five six seven paragraphs and the passage will have some important points here and there but it's going to have a lot of fluff a lot of examples and illustrations and you know irrelevant stuff and repetitions so your job is to look at this passage six seven paragraphs and pinpoint the most important things and those points are going to make it into your summary that's basically what a summary is all right let's look at the instructions for for the summary it's important that when you go into the exam you do not assume that you already know what the instructions are because you've worked many past papers the instructions at any given year can change even slightly all right so be sure when you enter the exam read everything as if you are looking at it for the first time so read the following article on coconut oil carefully list five million points this cost then write a summary of the article in not more than 120 words in one paragraph all right so let's break down these pieces of instruction so we're on the same page and we're not heading into the exam giving csec what they're not asking for you're gonna list five points that's what you're gonna do and you will notice that you will have some space with numbers one two three four five wants you to list in point form bullet form numbered form Five Points so that is one task and if you do that task well you're gonna get five marks for listing those Five Points all right so that is Task one you need to list five points then after listing those Five Points you're going to write a summary so you're doing two things you're listing the five main listing five million points then you're gonna write a summary and that summary will be written in one paragraph not two not three of course read the instructions when you enter the exam maybe one year see you SEC decides I want 10 paragraphs so always be sure to read but as far as I know one paragraph 120 words no pay attention to this sentence if this limit is exceeded only the first 120 words of your answer will be read and assessed so if you write 150 wonderful words only 120 of those words will be read and marked because doesn't care about anything above 120. no I would suggest that you do not go below 110 words there is no minimum word requirement there's only the maximum of 120 however they give you 120 words because that's how many words you need to write a summary so I will say try to keep within this sweet spot here between 110 and 120 if your summary is below 110 words chances are you've missed something or your summary isn't flowing smoothly all right so if you have a summary of 100 words read again double triple check and see if you can elaborate on a point make a point clearer or add a point no pop quiz before we start um annotating the passage how many points do we need to include in the summary let me know in the chat I want to see if you guys know what's going on so you're gonna list five points here we know that that part is easy when you write your actual summary how many points will you need to include in your story will it be five six seven let me know in the chat Rina says five all of these files are in trouble more like a grade five all of these fives are in trouble Danger you are not trying to get 25 marks you're trying to get 15 marks Kimberly says seven in their reports that the summary you write should include at least seven points all right at least seven seven plus seven eight nine ten so if you have if you only have your Five Points here where are we if you only give c-sec the Five Points you list here you cannot get full marks it's impossible all right you will not get full marks so what you need to do you're gonna find many points in the passage you're going to list five but in your actual summary you're gonna include more than five so it means you can include these Five Points up here Plus at least two more so we're going to list the five points not more than 120 words one single paragraph one fluid perfect flowing paragraph right and if you go over 120 words you're wasting your time because seasick will not be reading it if you go under 110 words it means your summary is lacking so remember all of these parameters within which you will be writing a summary all right so we've covered um this section here no let's go to this paragraph I didn't even plan on going through the instructions in detail however I see some people talking about Five Points so I'm going to go through the instructions because some of us are not sure as far as possible use your own words I cannot stress this enough if you copy and paste in the exam you will be proving to see SEC that you know how to read doing how to read is not enough to get a great one if you copy and paste the summary if you just pick out a whole sentence and write it down you're saying c-sec I can read I know words right if you want to prove that you can comprehend if you if you want to prove that you can write then you need to paraphrase you need to reword you need to where necessary restructure and organize the information logically so it means when you discover the immune points of the summary your job is going to be to write those points in your words not the same so you will not be writing in a summary they claim that the saturated fats are responsible for the condition if you write that who will send that in a summary you're not going to get marks because saying this person knows how to read but they don't know how to understand because if you understand something you're able to put it in your own words so please reword use your own words your summary must be in continuous prose that's obvious because they said they want a paragraph what it means is it's just regular flowing writing no bullet points no fancy formatting just give them a paragraph that's what they want all right you may use the space on page 5 to drop down a plan you're gonna get this big box and don't worry this box will be full I'm gonna teach you how I use this box and I would advise if you are planning to go into the exam and not use this box I think again all right think again you're gonna need to plan your summer before you write your summary your summary must include the Five Points identified so the Five Points you listed and other relevant points at least two more if you can give them a summary of 8 to 9 points that's nice but minimum seven no what we'll see is that be looking for when they check your summary a b and c let's see a b and c a they're gonna check how well you can identify the mean points and opinions in the extract so what it means is if you have excellent writing skills but you are not writing about the main points you're not getting a good Mark so you have to identify the points before again write a good summary yeah that makes sense B organize and express these ideas and opinions in your own words in your own words all right organize and Express don't just gloss over these words these words are the key to your success in the summary organize you're gonna find all kind of points all over the place in the passage your job in the exam is to order them properly include only the points that flow and make sure you're telling a complete narrative in your summary you have to organize well and a big part of organizing is knowing what is knowing how to connect the points with your transitional words and phrases so your summary flows well Express what do you mean by Express it means your vocabulary your sentence structure your addiction the the academic level of your writing how well do you say what you want to say some of us have good ideas but we're not good at communicating the ideas seasick wants to test how well you're able to communicate what you think the summaries are the passage is about so organize well Express well in your own words good let's look at C use appropriate grammar this is obvious this is English a right so make sure you're you're writing complete sentences make sure your subject and verb match all of these basic school things you need to get them straight sentence structure vocabulary and obviously spelling and punctuation don't go into the exam spelling things incorrectly right or you're going to lose marks or expression all right so that is it
