Frog Dissection and Nerve Stimulation Procedure

Preparation

  • Set Up: Place a pithed frog on a dissection board with its posterior surface facing upwards.

Skin Removal

  • Cut Open Skin: Use scissors to cut open the skin of the frog, starting from the abdomen and continuing down to the lower extremities.
  • Remove Skin: Carefully remove the skin to expose the underlying structures.

Muscle Exposure

  • Cut Thigh Muscles: Use a scalpel to cut through the thigh muscles to expose the sciatic nerve.
  • Pin Muscles: Pin the muscles down on either side to keep the area stable for further work.

Nerve Isolation

  • Free the Nerve: Use a seeker to carefully free the sciatic nerve from the surrounding tissue.
  • Insert Forceps: Place a pair of forceps under the nerve to assist in handling it.
  • Moisten Nerve: Apply a few drops of Ringer's solution to keep the nerve and muscle moist.

Muscle Stabilization

  • Fix the Muscle: Pin the muscle at the knee to stabilize its position for the stimulation process.

Nerve Stimulation

  • Apply Voltage:
    • First, apply 6 volts to stimulate the nerve and observe any changes in the calf muscle.
    • Next, apply 10 volts to stimulate the nerve again and observe changes in the calf muscle.
