Lecture: Organs and Glands that Release Hormones

Overview

  • Focus on organs and glands that release hormones
  • Brief coverage of key hormones
  • Subsequent videos: detailed discussion on each hormone
  • Important for nursing students to understand endocrine disorders
  • Covered on cards 2-4

Hypothalamus

  • Located in the brain
  • Releases 4 key hormones:
    • Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH)
    • Thyroid-releasing hormone (TRH)
    • Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH)
    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
  • Mnemonic: Cutthroat Good Game (C, T, G, G)

Pituitary Gland

  • Located in the brain
  • Anterior Pituitary Gland:
    • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
    • Prolactin
    • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
    • Luteinizing hormone (LH)
    • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
    • Growth hormone (GH)
    • Mnemonic: TP FLAG (T, P, F, L, A, G)
  • Posterior Pituitary Gland:
    • Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)
    • Oxytocin

Thyroid Gland

  • Located in the neck
  • Produces:
    • T3 (Triiodothyronine)
    • T4 (Thyroxine)
    • Calcitonin

Parathyroid Glands

  • 4 glands near the thyroid gland
  • Produces Parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Adrenal Glands

  • Located on top of the kidneys
  • Adrenal Cortex (outer layer):
    • Aldosterone
    • Cortisol
    • Androgens
  • Adrenal Medulla (inner layer):
    • Epinephrine
    • Norepinephrine

Pancreas

  • Located behind the stomach
  • Produces:
    • Insulin
    • Glucagon

Testes

  • Produces Testosterone

Ovaries

  • Produces:
    • Estrogen
    • Progesterone
