Tesla Model Y Review

oh that was actually good law [Music] ready we got satellites here we go that was actually pretty good 0 to 100 in 6.5 seconds on a 14 okay that's not right yeah all right here we go okay god come on it's time to hold [Laughter] seconds hi Jacob a Hey Matt what the hell is this it's the bloody new Model Y all right um shrouded in controversy obviously let's just quickly address the elephant in the room we do not make political comment here we simply drive bloody cars we're just silly little boys and that's what this is um this is the new Tesla Model Y this is a huge huge departure away from the previous Model Y yes under the skin it shares some componentry but a lot of it something like 50 to 70% you never know with Tesla has changed under the skin and it feels wildly different way better than before and frankly it needs to be way better than before globally Tesla sales are down heavily heavily down and so the Tesla Model Y needs to be good as their global best seller so today we're going to tell you everything you need to know about the new Tesla Model Y what have they improved what are some things that they still definitely need to improve and whether or not you should go out and buy one especially over cars like the BYDC line 7 which have come to the market or the Xping G6 and have really thrown some shade at the Tesla Model Y an early plug I know but make sure you are subscribed because also today we are doing a comparison between this and the BYD C Lion 7 and that one is going to be spicy let's get into it let's do it okay let's talk about pricing uh Daddy Jacob because this thing received a lot of price cuts uh to try and make it more competitive at least in the prefaceelift the pre Juniper this one now though it is well priced I think I think for what you get in this new one it's definitely well priced now you can get the Tesla Model Y in two different variants there's the Core which is rear wheel drive it comes with an LFP battery or lithium ferrris phosphate it is about 60 kW hours in size so actually quite a small battery but the good thing about it is that one they say it's safer maybe but two you can charge it up to 100% % every time totally fine this one here though is the all-wheel drive longrange that comes with a larger 75 kWh battery it also charge faster 220 kW versus 170 kW that you'll find in the rear wheel drive but it's an NMC battery which means you don't want to charge it often past 90% if you do so it will degrade the battery faster so in actuality even though this thing's WLTP is about 570 km the real world WLTP or real world range for both of these vehicles is about the same at about 520 km and this one here will set you back at 68,900 before on-road costs which are actually really respectable prices frankly i totally agree and that does make this thing actually significantly more expensive about $5,000 more versus a BYD Sea Line 7 Performance which does get a little bit more power and torque let's talk about this though Daddy Jacob because wow have they changed the design dude oh my god it looks a little bit more cyber trucky now if you don't like the look of the Cybert truck look away now guys you're not going to like the look of this i actually quite like it i think it looks really cool i actually don't mind the lack of logo too yeah that's an interesting one so because Tesla know that this is so recognizably Tesla they don't need the badge there anymore so they've gotten rid of the badge from the front it is totally badgeless you do get this really nice new light bar though it looks very very cool turning signals are quite small but they're in there you've also got quite bright LEDs there too matrix LEDs which is nice to see and then down the bottom you get a bunch of active arrow the bonnet is actually a lot lower now so all of the panels of this thing have pretty much been changed nothing is really a carryover which is a huge tooling expense but good to see that Tesla have actually done something they've somehow made the Tesla Model Y even more efficient and we saw that as you saw at the beginning of this video when we launched it this thing is actually faster than it was before but you'll see that very soon a couple of other things to point out you do get these air curtains here to streamline air over the side and also you have a camera here this is still running hardware 4 which is the current generation that we've seen on the outgoing Tesla Model Y in terms of its safety systems which means that don't expect any changes versus before it still has a camerabased sensor system which sucks and they're still charging people for full self-driving yeah self-driving if you get that I think you'd be a bit silly at this point yes $10,000 and there is zero timeline for it ever entering Australia it's been promised for many many many years let's check out the side now what you're hearing right now is the air conditioning going off which is actually a good segue to this the iPhone or an Android because of course you can use the Tesla app now one of the biggest reasons you would even buy a Tesla is just of how well integrated they are this is your key it can do things like make the car fart right yeah that's the most important feature isn't it yeah but it has a bunch of features that no one else has been able to rival you do also get an NFC card but by far this is the best way to interact with your Tesla i love I love watching the Century through my phone yeah nothing like watching people that's why you have so many cameras around your house and apparently that's why this thing has so many cameras now the side 19in wheels these are arrow covers as well a lot of people used to rip them off i would recommend keeping them on because if you do it actually degrades your range by a significant amount this makes the car a lot more slippery it's also wrapped in some Hand Cook Ventus S1 Evo Cubed EV tires god that's a mouthful god that's a dumb name um yeah specially developed for the Model Y though you have another camera here and a camera in your B-pillar as well the door handles haven't changed so they're still going to confuse the out of people the first time they see it they're going to be like "What the hell?" But anyway I think they work totally fine some of the most tinted privacy glass I have ever seen it's so dark you literally cannot see inside i cannot see inside i'm standing right next to the car by the way your B-pillar is also where you tap your NFC card um and then this like rear 3/4 panel is pretty much the only thing that's the same cuz wait till you check out its ass oh it's cool okay let's talk about the bum on this thing first of all I'm sorry for the dustiness um I'm not joking we've run out of water we literally have no water on this property so apologies apologies we normally wash the cars anyway you do get this really nice light bar that runs across the back except it's not really light bar it's like a reflection it's a diffuse light bar let's wait to see how many let's be honest Chinese car manufacturers will copy that design now that's going to be the next big thing cuz honestly it looks really cool this is the only Tesla badge you'll see Tesla spelt out there you've got another camera back here who could have thought dual motor badge there too and this is so funny so the back panel used to be at one nice big press however people can't drive and so they would back into things all the time and then to replace that panel was extremely expensive and uh timeconuming as well so now what they've done is they've actually split up all of these panels you now get this plastic bumper it sticks out a bit further still nicely designed but it's designed so that if you're a little bit inco as I say incompetent and you back up and hit something it's easy to replace that plastic that's awesome i love that so I guess again you know they're kind of thinking about they're they're thinking about you they're thinking about the common man yeah they're thinking about you let's talk about what it can fit in its bum though because one of the things that Tesla are going to love to tell you is they have broken a world record a land speed record not sure if this is a Guinness World Record which is obviously the benchmark for any world record but it is a world record nonetheless these are the fastest folding rear seats in the world bloody hell and you know what i'll give it to you they fold pretty damn fast but we're going to put them up for a moment not that it will take very long here you get an enormous amount of room honestly this is one of the most practical EVs frankly family cars ever 854 L of boot space that does include the underfloor storage but if you put your cargo blind back there which by the way doesn't properly fit it almost fits but not quite what did Tesla tell you that if you put something on top of it it'll fit unreal i love that uh anyway you get a bunch of storage under there and like I said you can fold these seats forward and then you just get an enormous amount of space it's all carpeted everything stays nice and quiet you also get a frunk 114 L of boot space and the new fain dangled feature for that is that well gone is the carpet that they used to put in there and now you get a drain plug you can use it as an ESI love it that's kind of fun i love that let's check out the interior all righty oh Daddy Matt daddy Jacob this is a pretty nice place to be it's nice in like a not a traditional sense it's nice in like a wow we've really made it to the future yeah getting in here now honestly it feels right okay it genu like say what you will about Tesla they nail the interior space so what's new this display even though it looks the same is actually bigger it's now 15.4 in it's using a new Ryzen processor from AMD god that's probably expensive it probably is expensive but it's really really good you do have to control everything through this display and I mean everything if you guys have seen any other Tesla reviews you'll know about this but even to change your air conditioning controls you have to use the display here which again a lot of Chinese car manufacturers are copying but some like Xpang are actually reverting back cuz if you want to change your air vents you have to do it through the display you can do things like open your frunk and trunk through here as well or as we would call them boot and fruit even though this does not come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for whatever beef reasons they have with both of those uh players it does still use Google Maps and it's such a good integration because it'll do things like calculate exactly what your battery percentage will be including through all of the elevations it's so clever it's unbelievably good so you don't actually miss it using this and this is the only time I will say I don't care that it doesn't have Apple CarPlay or Android you now get this new thin rimmed steering wheel it feels quite nice to hold in the hands you will see that they have kept a indicator stalk except it's now a fancy bougie design to it actually feels kind of nice to use it does it's got a very nice weighting to it because in the Model 3 they changed it to a button system and people did not like that i didn't mind it but a lot of people didn't like it the minimalist theme continues though because for example if you want to adjust uh the tilt or rake of your steering wheel you do have to use the buttons on the steering wheel and click a few buttons it's kind of annoying but how often are you adjusting your steering wheel 100% i totally agree with you oh also you want to put the car into reverse or drive or anything that is new so the uh gear selector stalk is gone and now um you have a thing here you put your foot on the brake and you can slide it forward or back you can put it into a predictive mode which is in beta i would not recommend it because let's just say Tesla's track record with betas it's not great and something to keep in mind as well is if you cannot use the display here you can actually click the buttons up here for your gear selector so do keep that in mind new also is this dash design so you now get this ambient lighting running across it is so simple yet it's so effective it looks fantastic soft touch materials absolutely everywhere i love this suedelike Alcantara on the doors you got buttons to open your doors as well less confusing than outside another huge thing are these seats so these seats have now been changed they feel so much better than before they feel real whereas before they were you know very soft and frankly you could tell that they were fake leather this honestly feels like real leather and it's important that they are perforated as well because they're now cooled as well extremely important in a hot climate like Australia even today though there isn't actually all that much heat coming through the sunroof which has actually been updated to apparently be seven times more repellent for the sun that's awesome i honestly it feels that way the sun today is extremely harsh and it's not too bad interestingly they decided to leave out like the last 10 cm it's not a huge issue in terms of storage and practicality it is extremely practical you get two wireless chargers here excuse me while I click a couple of buttons you also have a pretty large glove box as well this is awesome you pull away these you get a couple of cup holders and then you get some of the largest amount of storage space ever i bet you didn't expect that to be there you could probably fit half your body in there yeah genuinely you could get probably four of those large bottles in there seriously very impressive this soft center armrest is nice and inside you get plenty of space if you didn't know you didn't know there's a USBC port here but it's almost impossible to see so kind of blends in with the black doesn't it yeah that could be lit up but you know it's a small minor grievance and the other thing as well is that this gets the 16 speaker sound system if you go for the rear wheel drive it doesn't get that that's pretty much the only difference on the interior the sound system is phenomenal one of the best sound systems out there if you like your tunes you are going to love it there's another huge and meaningful change in here and that is that they've replaced the glass here so it's actually now uh more acoustically treated the windows are extremely thick they're double glazed as well and it is a quiet place to be it's very luxury this is honestly ing on the side of luxury which is quite impressive for a car that at this point maxes out at 68,800 before the performance comes pretty cool genuinely incredible let's check out the back seats let's do it all righty Daddy Jacob back seats now of the Tesla Model Y are they any different they feel quite similar but also a little bit different so first of all the seats they're the same as up front they're just a little bit thinner but they feel so much better i love the perforations in them as well fold down center armrest with a couple of cup holders there the biggest change back here is definitely this display so unnecessary but still kind of cool so if you want to change your air conditioner controls you do have to do it through this display which is whatever you can also recline your seats from here it's not the most amount of recline but hey it's something you can also move the front seat this is a very luxury feature and it's pretty cool because it's just one button and not only does the base move forward but the back rest also moves forward so quite luxury there to be honest back seats too are also heated on the outboard seats so yeah quite a lot of luxury features you can play games in the back as well but uh it's in a terrible position to do so so yeah I don't know how well you could play no uh we don't have any of the games cuz we haven't downloaded it this car is brand spanking new i think you picked it up you were the first We're the first in Victoria to have this car yeah lucky us kind of cool fact you got a couple of USB C ports there which is nice you have some folio pockets here as well they're not very practical but hey at least they feel nice soft touch materials absolutely everywhere and there's a lot of hidden changes as well that you can't say like the torsional rigidity of the car is stronger the door latches are also stronger so you just get a nicer feel throughout so good now in terms of uh space back here at 5'11 I've got enough leg room tow room as well is fantastic headroom is actually pretty decent especially considering the koopy design of this and the slippery drag coefficient i will say my legs are at an okay angle like most EVs because the battery lives in the floor the floor is raised up it's fine uh but we'll have to see in like a year's time when every Uber driver is driving one of these how it actually feels because previously boy terrible oh what a horrible place when you order an Uber and you see that Model Y rock up you're like "Oh god." Yeah exactly right uh teeth chatteringly bad whether or not you agree with me I don't care because that's just our opinion and our opinion is right exactly right oh and the uh ambient lighting extends back here as well you know what else extends extends back here do I want to know it's called Car Source Buy that's right we have our car buying service no you can't buy a Tesla through us can't even Car Source Spy to save thousands of dollars on their new cars daddy Jacob should we see if it's faster let's bloody do it all righty Daddy Jacob it's time to launch the moment of truth last time we got 4.83 seconds but that I think that had the performance pack on it i don't think we have it on this one you can spend a bit more money and essentially unlock more power we love that who needs it who needs it fist me fist me good here we go oh no actually good law ah [Music] we're going to have to do that again ah we're going to have to do that one again i think so all right let's try that again okay let me get my little titty cam good i think you're going to have to fist yourself this time you know what no i'm going to give you a little fist right up here give me a little fist unreal all right here we go all right we're locked in ready we got satellites here we go that was actually pretty good oh yeah the power feels so good oh that was not a great 0 to 60 all right what are we at what are we at bro i feel like you eased off there at the end i didn't really 0 to 100 in 6.5 seconds on a 14 okay okay i think I think I don't think it lights the roof you have to put it up here 14% downhill that's not right yeah something tells me that uh the new UV protection seven times stronger at repelling the pervy sun also seven times stronger at repelling satellite waves all right let's do that again god all righty let's do this one more time fist me that was not a good fist let's do it again all right oh now we have full bars i've never seen that i've never seen full bars all right here we go okay god come on it's hard to hold ah oh that's so much better ah maybe the uh the old Model Y needed a warm up yeah all right that's pretty good it's at 100 in 4.74 seconds woo unreal all right let's drive this thing normally let's do it all righty Daddy Jacob dude this is huge let's test the new Model Y life oh my Oh my god so powering this thing are two electric motors front and rear outputs god a lot 378 kW of power 493 new m of torque so it's no slouch no you put your foot down oh God and let's just say we do not have chill acceleration on right now okay we are definitely not in chill mode but we're also not in ludicrous mode cuz this thing it's not like crazy fast you know what I mean but it is it's pretty damn I think for the normal person this would be like terrifyingly fast but for a seasoned automotive journalist it's like quick it's brisk you know what I mean it's brisk uh can I just comment though bro what the handling the ride so they say somewhere between like 50 and 60% of all components have been changed it's funny okay because it's kind of like I know exactly what you mean i don't know how to describe it so the way I would describe it is you still feel the road but it does have a really kind of I don't want to say doughy cuz that makes it sound bad but it does kind of mute the bumps and the imperfections in the road slightly so it gives you a little bit of a disconnected feeling but you still get enough of a feedback from the road that it doesn't feel 100% smooth it's better it's now got frequency selective dampers so depending on the vibrations of the road literally the frequency of bumps when you hit them on the road the damper settings will change it's a passive damper still it's not adaptive dampers but it's it just brings this really interesting dynamic where it's got a very soft almost primary ride but the secondary ride is still actually quite stiff but which is good because it it you know gives it a sporty feel and without having the crashiness of the prefaceelift so the prefaceelift was just bad i like I'm sorry it was just bad a lot of people actually didn't mind it but I think they honestly just didn't really understand how bad it was it's like teeth chattering i remember like the amount of times I've sat in the back of an Uber a Tesla Model Y and I've genuinely just felt nauseous because it it doesn't ride well 100% agree honestly it made me never want to get into a Model Y and it was particularly bad in the rear as well cuz the rear suspension was really bad and you just got a lot of vibration and sound in the rear particularly yeah this is a remarkable remarkable improvement over it all right tickle my little pickle oh my god saucy corner time let's do it can you brake boost it no it didn't like that really didn't like it i love the power delivery it's so good all right here we go no grab handle so steering is still weirdly heavy like it's not quite right oh wow the traction control is definitely cutting in though oh as you hear the tires screeching but it does feel honestly it's a lot of fun to drive but you've been driving this more than me and I I know what you mean now by that it's a bit still it's still quite firm you know but I think I prefer it to something like a BYD Cine 7 which has a much softer ride and is maybe more comfortable for highway driving but it wouldn't do that up source corner yeah but that being said if you look at the BYD Cine 7 which is definitely much more of a direct competitor to this the performance version of that drove so well it did drive quite well you know so I'd have to probably do a backto-back comparison i think we need to do it back the Cline 7 performance and this just to see but this is really impressing me if we just think back to the original Model Y that we reviewed way better 100% the other thing as well is the autopilot now autopilot used to be the the bomb.com it was the bees knees it was the bee's knees i don't think so anymore i think other things have caught up the hardware in this or hardware 4 they call it where it's just camerabased system it does still have its moments where it will pick up something random on the road and just break it happened to me literally just before yeah and and that's really annoying and really frustrating and frankly quite dangerous because you could have a car up your ass that's about to get a fright yeah and it will it will actually violently jerk the steering wheel out of your hands which is an alarming feeling actually yeah and this camera up here is overzealous because of the accidents that Tesla has had on full self-driving uh and they've been sued a few times because people have unfortunately died it has meant that they have gone really over the top in terms of the cabin monitoring so if it detects even the slightest amount of you're not concentrating or whatever it will simply kick you out of autopilot for the rest of the drive which is ridiculous and if you do it like five times it will just ban you for a week or something it's It's actually like kind of nanny state yeah I agree i agree i think it's a little bit overdone in terms of just the babying of the driver but I mean you could apply that same argument to a lot of competitors in this segment it's just none of the other ones will ban you no like that's a bit extreme uh and also it's quite quiet in here which is what I'm noticing that's what I was going to say i think they've managed to get the NVH way better in this and also I haven't really been hearing any wind noise or anything through the glass roof no it's nice and quiet there aren't any like rattles and creeks that the old one was just marred with it's It's quite nice obviously this is a brand new Tesla Model Y but you could get into a brand new Tesla Model Y before and it have bad build quality this it's pretty nice it's pretty solid also those handcooked tires they are specially developed for the Model Y the new Model Y and um yeah really really good really quiet on the road the other thing that Tesla does really well is just their batteries so 75 kWh NMC battery but the thing about this whole system is that it's so efficient we're seeing 14.4 kW hours per 100 km i mean not anymore we're not we're seeing 26 on this drive on this drive honestly one of the most efficient EVs in fact it is the most efficient midsized family SUV out there and that was already the case that was already the case before the facelift and now it's just even more efficient i think they improved the drag coefficient by like 01 like you will get close to its claimed WLTP range of about 550 km which is immensely impressive overall I think the driving experience is way way better i still think that there are some issues i don't think it's the most incredible driving experience ever but as far as midsize family EV SUVs goes this is the standard this is the standard and this is what I would benchmark everything against 100% agree but like a Kia Sportage that doesn't weigh two tons would ride better than this oh no doubt no doubt but for EVs yeah unreal all right let's get into our final thoughts let's do it all righty guys final thoughts now on the Tesla Model Y the new one should you buy the Juniper frankly I think it's really good i honestly think this is the benchmark for this segment man yeah it maintains the benchmark it needed to change a few things and it did change them the biggest issue was the suspension it has fixed it still feels a little bit odd but also a little bit fun to drive it's fast it's efficient it does everything you need an EV to do and it does it the best there is no doubt about that yeah i mean the software is next to none the charger network is next to none like that's all you really care about with an EV but it doesn't mean it's going to be for everyone so like I said in the beginning of the video make sure you subscribe because we are comparing this to the BYDC Line 7 and there are definitely going to be some people who won't want this and will want that and of course if you want to buy most new cars in Australia you can't buy a Tesla can't buy but if you want the best deal on literally any other car check out Car Source Buy and our dedicated team of car buyers will help you totally for free ciao for now bye-bye
