# How a DM Water Plant Works
## Introduction
- The primary purpose of a DM water plant is to remove impurities from water.
- Impurities can be of three types:
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
## Process
### Pre-Treatment
- Suspended and colloidal solids are removed.
- Liquid impurities are extracted.
### Ion Exchange Technique
- **Cation Exchanger:**
- Remove cations using cation resin.
- The cation resin has a very large surface area.
- Cation ions are absorbed on the ion exchange resin.
- **Anion Exchanger:**
- Remove anions using anion resin.
### Degasser
- The degasser is used to remove CO2.
- Works to reduce CO2 in the water after the cation exchanger.
## Regeneration Process
- Treat the resin with an acid or base solution.
- Send wastewater to the ETP.
## Features and Tips
- The cation exchanger is first to lower pH and easily remove carbonates.
- Use a mixed bed to prevent silica slip in the anion exchanger.
- The mixed bed works by combining anion and cation resins to remove remaining impurities.
- Backwashing separates and regenerates cation and anion resins.
## Conclusion
- This process purifies and makes the water usable.
- Regenerating the resin properly maintains the system's efficiency.
