Language Nomads: Basic Concepts of the Korean Language

Introduction

Hangul (Korean Writing System)

  • Writing system similar to an alphabet
  • Each symbol represents a sound
  • Combination of symbols creates words
  • Key components:
    • Vowels: Drawn vertically or horizontally
    • Blocks: Represent a single syllable

Writing Rules

  • Vowel is always at position 2
  • Consonants are at positions 1, 3, and sometimes 4
  • Structure of blocks:
    • Horizontally drawn vowel options
    • Vertically drawn vowel options

Sentence Structure

  • Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) structure
    • Subject: Person/thing performing the action
    • Object: What the verb acts on
    • Example: "The girl (subject) sings a song (object)."

Basic Korean Greetings

  • Hello: 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo)
  • Thank you: 감사하다 (gamsahamnida)
  • How are you?: 잘 지내세요 (jal jinaeseyo) (not commonly used)
  • Please: 제발 (jebal)
