Spine User Guide Lecture Notes

Introduction

  • Overview of Spine features for setting up skeletons and animations

  • Note: Using Spine on Mac, command key = CTRL key on Windows/Linux

Installation

  • Evaluating Spine:
    • Download Spine trial (cannot save/export projects)
    • Available for Windows, Mac, Linux 32bit & 64bit
  • Purchased Spine:

Running Spine

  • First Startup: Requires internet connection for updates
    • Proxy server details can be specified
  • Regular Use: Internet required only for updates
    • Updates download/install automatically (can change behavior)
    • Older versions available
    • Changelog available under Documentation => Changelog
  • Example Projects:
    • Default: Spineboy project
    • Other examples in Spine installation folder under examples sub-folder

Using Spine

Interface

  • Editor Area: Left side, displays current project (e.g., Spineboy)
  • Tree View: Right side, customizable (resize and reposition tabs)
  • Main Menu: Access by clicking Spine logo top left

Navigation

  • Panning: Right mouse button + move mouse (configurable hotkey)
  • Zooming:
    • Scroll mouse-wheel up/down on area of interest
    • Alternatively, drag vertical slider for zoom
    • Zoom to 100% or fit skeleton to editor view with buttons

Hotkeys

  • Undo: CMD+Z
  • Redo: CMD+SHIFT+Z or CMD+Y
  • Non-QWERTY keyboards: Default hotkeys may differ (e.g., QWERTZ)
  • Customizable hotkeys

Modes

  • Setup Mode: Create/configure skeletons
  • Animate Mode: Create animations
    • Switch modes using top left corner buttons
    • Dopesheet visible by default in Animate Mode
    • Play and Loop buttons to test animations
