Types of Semiconductor

• Conductor:
  • Partially filled conduction bands.
• Insulator:
  • Electrons do not easily enter the conduction band.
• Semiconductor:
  • Small gap between valence band and conduction band.

Doping in Semiconductor

• N-type:
  • Donor atoms like phosphorus.
• P-type:
  • Acceptor atoms like aluminum.

Energy Band Diagram

• N-type:
  • Donor energy level is near conduction band.
• P-type:
  • Acceptor energy level is near valence band.

VI Characteristics

• Forward Biasing:
  • Current flows easily.
• Reverse Biasing:
  • Current is negligible.

Rectification

Half Wave Rectifier

• One diode is used.
• Converts only half of the pulse.

Full Wave Rectifier

• Two diodes are used.
• Rectifies the entire wave.

Important Questions

• Diffusion and Drift Current:

  • Diffusion current goes from P to N.
  • Drift current goes from N to P.
