Lecture Notes: Board Meeting Presentation

Kindergarten and First Grade ELA Curriculum Option

  • Presenter: Dr. Moran
  • Current Status: Teachers in grades K-5 have been involved in the "letters science of reading" professional development for 2 years.
  • Requirement: State mandates districts have a Literacy Instructional Standards Plan and a Literacy Intervention Plan with consistent literacy materials across grades.
  • Goal: Align K-8 curriculum materials by end of the year.
  • Review Process: Academic Services team reviewed materials, literacy leaders evaluated options.
  • Curriculum Request: Led by Carla Murray, requesting board approval for new K-1 curriculum.
  • Evaluation: Used a rubric to evaluate ELA curriculum, EL Education scored highest.

Power Scholars Academy - YMCA Partnership for Summer Program

  • Goal: Enhance summer program for grades K-3 with YMCA partnership.
  • Program Details:
    • Academic focus in the morning (reading and math)
    • Enrichment activities in the afternoon
    • Field trips every Friday
    • SEL component included
  • Past Success: Program piloted in Wake County with positive results.
  • Staff Involvement: Chatham County Schools teachers will be involved.
  • Cost: Approximately $481,000, YMCA to offset additional costs through grants and donations.

Summer Readministration Plan

  • State Law Compliance: Retesting must occur after the last school day.
  • Schedule: June 9th-11th, with extended window until June 18th.
  • Changes: Science assessments' results delayed due to renorming.

Audit Contract Approval

  • Firm: Anderson, Smith & Wike PC.
  • Contract Fee: Not to exceed $46,400.
  • History: Firm has been auditing since 2015.

Memorandums of Agreement

East Chatham Chargers

  • Usage: Northwood High School facilities.
  • Purpose: Provide space understanding for responsibilities.

North Carolina Challengers

  • Usage: Northwood High School softball field.
  • Purpose: Extend softball opportunities under an existing baseball organization.

PMAN Flag Football

  • Initiative by: Former NFL player from Chatham County.
  • Program: Part of NFL FLAG, aims to start flag football programs.
